OFFICIAL TRAVEL GUIDE: JAPAN

Let's talk budget #s, what are some recommended accomodations? I just found a $600 flight from Philly to Tokyo

Around $600 is usually what it is from here in Honolulu.

I took 2k but only ended up spending about half.

In tokyo we rented a apartment or weekly mansion as they call it, but i wouldnt recommend that.

try and check japanican.com, thats what we used to rent a hotel in Osaka. Got a real nice room for $40 a night, regular price was $150.

I personally would try to find a hotel in Shibuya.

I stayed here (http://www.tokyuhotelsjapan.com/en/hotel/TE/TE_SHIBU/) last May and for me it's on the best side of the JR line (Shinjuku & Harajuku are super close, Ebisu is worth checking out). Tempted to go again this year because the yen is sloooowwwly creeping back up but it's the lowest it's been in quite sometime. I went in '11 and it was like 75-80Y to the dollar, and now's like 117 to the dollar.

Japan is my absolutely favorite country to go to. Osaka is wonderful & worth checking out if you have time.

I am doing Airbnb in shibuya.. Save yourself alot of $$$ plus I am planning to visit 3 differ cities in happan. Kyoto, MT. Fuji and shibuya area... So air bnb is the best option for the money.

Just the thread I was looking for!

I'll be going to Japan with my brother March 30 - April 7. The itinerary is:

Day 1: Tokyo (Hotel, 1 night)
Day 2: Tokyo -> Hiroshima -> Okayama (friend's place, 1 night)
Day 3: Okayama -> Osaka -> (hopefully) Nara) -> Kyoto (friend's friend's place, 1 night)
Day 4: Kyoto (Ryokan)
Day 5-8: Kyoto -> Tokyo (Hotel)

I'm not really convinced we'll need the JP Rail Pass. I read it's only valid on slow trains on the Tokaido - Sanyo Shinkansen line, which is basically the line all these cities are along. So, I'm thinking we'll get a one way Nozomi ticket from Tokyo -> Shin-Osaka, then validate a regional 5-day ticket which lets us use the Shinkansen (even though we'll use it for approx. 3 days), then another Nozomi ticket on day 5 from Kyoto -> Tokyo. I don't want to waste time travelling when I can be seeing cool stuff.

Any NT'ers wanna chime in on their Japan train travel experiences?

Peace

I never got the rail pass. You should be fine from a cost perspective unless you're on the train 15 times a day.

Have fun in Osaka though man....that's where a lot of the AV girls come from

....but also eat a ton of okonomiyaki & takoyaki while you're there. Some of the nicest people I've ever met live in Osaka.

I bought the rail pass since I'm traveling alot around Tokyo. But it is costly.. $230 for 7 day pass.

With the itinerary we're planning, I think the difference between buying the JP Rail Pass vs separate tickets is about 80 Euros.

If I have a conviction that was expunged in California, would this prevent me from entering the country?

Japan is dope pero mucho $$$$$. Some guy i know just copped a ticket for $484.00 round trip. I'd love to visit.

Finally got some free time to post pics. Forewarning there are A LOT of pics in this spoiler. I just copy and pasted big groups of pictures because I was not taking the time to go through all of these individually so I apologize if some of the pics seem random and pointless :rollin I'm not a great photographer either and just snap whatever. This was trip 1. Beijing, Seoul, DMZ, Hong Kong. I have a bunch of pics from another trip as well I will upload if I get a chance. Will try to caption some of these pics later also
