Old Nikes destroyed by time ... or my poor care?

true but the Ndestrukts are my grail and if i get them cheap i get them and wear them a few times before they go, i might try the caulking technique i saw someone do for a full midsole repair and see if that works or maybe use liquid nails to hold it together, ill let u know if it works (doubtful)

I am an Ndestrukt freak too and you will be appalled to know I have lost 5 pair the last couple of years. Tragic. All from foam crumbling, all 96 OG.

yeah ive had 4 pair, 2 run to the ground and 2 crumbled so i feel your pain and whats worst of all is those remix peices of crap they gave us instead of an actual retro

^dope. I had a pair of the black patent ndestrukts too. Those were actually the ones I first noticed feeling a little weird.

most likely a little of both.. but mostly time. the shoe wears away after time.. they are meant to be worn... nothing lasts forever. so if they are in your closet, start wearing them ASAP before this happens.. all the more reason to start Un-Ds'ing every week.

i think it depends on where you store them and its humidity.. i have a pair of og kidds from my uncle..he rarely used it back then and now i ball in them and no issues with it...

if they are worn shoes. they will keep up better. i have a shoe i have been wearing for 10 years +.. no problems..  But if they havent been "broken in", it has a tendency to fall apart much quicker due to storage and time.

Several people have said this, but i wonder why that would be the case. Why would wearing these shoes make it less likely that the foam will crumble? Maybe a chemist can explain it. :)

take it this way.. (this is what I think)

i think they have already been exposed to moistures and the elements that could destory them .  Secondly, I think the most stress that can be done to a shoe, is in the break-in period.   Its the first 10 times you wear the shoe..  Its where the shoe is bending, and conforming to how you put pressure on it and how you stand... When you try to break in shoes that have been DS'ed over 10 years, paint chips, mid soles crack and ext..  Its more more fragile at the stage where its been stored DS.. It is not prone to pressure, so when pressure is applied, it falls apart.. But broken in kicks, are already accustomed to it and beyond.

as far as the foam. im sure the air , heat and other chemicals or what not, create some sort of shield against it.. like a layer over the foam material which protects it.. but yea we will need a chemist to confirm this.

i think that the most stressful period in a shoes life is the break-in period. the first 10 times you wear it.. if you shoe is really going to fall apart or there are defects this is the period where it shoes.. its a period of time where the shoe has to conform to your foot and how you put pressure on it..  It has to withstand and it get use to the pressure (wieght) you put on it.. For DS shoes that have been stored over time, when this happens paint chips, midsoles crack, and other problems.. we all know that as shoes are stored , they become more prone to become fragile ...  but worn shoes have already gone through that process and beyond.. so when new shoes become fragile over time, it cant take the stress that is exerted onto the shoe in the break-in period (pressure, air, heat, cold and etc).. because worn shoes have already gone through it, they dont just fall apart as easily.

I'm not sure if this is true or not.

In some cases, it doesn't matter, and in some cases it seems as if it does. I have many pre-2000 AM 95s for example that bit the dust 7 - 14 years in. Some I wore all the time, some I wore but rarely so, and were DS and them crumbled the first few times out the box.

A lot of it depends on the material of the shoe. Different models have different track records. But, I'm not sure the idea about wearing them preserving them is anything more than anecdotal.

Nothing you could done differently, especially if you live in a humid climate. Moisture is deadly to foam midsoles. Another reason to actually wear them while you can...

gotta keep this one in mind.

This is a PerFect example of why you should wear your shoes. They are going to deteriorate anyways. I store all my shoes in an AirConditioned room and some of them Yellowed, some the soles separated and cracked or some of the soles got Very soft (fragile). After going thru that, I no longer buy doubles and I wear them all and enjoy them. Nothing Lasts Forever!!!:rolleyes

"On the NikeTalk.com board, user BlackVetteGS perhaps put it best in a thread about crumbling shoes, writing, "This is a perfect example of why you should wear your shoes. co sign to just wear em, even if it's just a few times a year.  I had 15-16 year old sneakers that I wore now and then in the past and they seemed to hold up just fine.  but once I put em away for a year without wearing em at all they cracked.  and get rid of the tissue paper, I can't remember where but I read some place that it has chemicals in it that attack your sneakers once it reaches a certain age.  gets acidic and messes with the foam or something along those lines.  don't keep em in the box either, that messes with em too.

What a sad thread and I can relate.  I had a pair of Air Flight Vroomlicious that I bought back in '99.  I wore them several times a year up until last year.  I brought them out for a day, back in February, and they completely fell apart.  By the end of the day, they were crumbled and even the air bags were cracked, split, and broke into pieces.

I've heard that keeping them in the OG boxes is okay and then I've read that it's not, anyone have any experience with that?  This is the first time I'm reading about the tissue paper and now that's got me worried.  I'd love to get some drop front shoe boxes but I wear a size 12 and the dimensions I'm seeing go up to size 10.  Any advice on that or where I can find bigger boxes for shelf storage?

Goes to show, wear your shoes. I have a pair of 2002 Air Revolutions in the og White/blue colorway that are still wearable but I can see stress points where the shoe would probably crumble on me but luckily they are still wearable for the time being so I'm just going to wear them as often as I can to preserve them. Hopefully they don't fall apart on me. I try to wear them lightly knowing they are so old. Love them shoes. Sorry to hear for y'all loses. Nothing beats the quality of older Nikes compared to what they are putting out now.

Hey since I said something about both of these I should maybe clarify; my experience with this is with old Nike boxes from the early 90's that look glossy or shiny or something.  I tend to think that it might be some of the chemicals in this glossy finish that become unstable and mess with the shoes.  Far as tissue paper, well, I had some Adidas sneakers in storage from 2008-2013 with the tissue paper stuffed in them and they're OK in 2015.  I did remove that stuff in 2013 after I read it can be bad though.  Those sneakers are OK last I checked.  Matter fact I used to use tissue paper on certain sneakers I wore as a crease reducer but then those were sneakers that I was wearing which seems to make all the difference.  Far as storage goes, until you get some museum grade storage container(s) just use a Sterilite cabinet.  I think that storing sneakers on their sides long term increases the chances for cracks anyways.
