Some of them look really bad too.
There's some implication that the medals aren't made of the correct materials - but it does seem to mainly be the expected chemistry when they added iron from the Eiffel tower to the medals.

IOC will replace swimmer Gary Hall Jr.'s medals, which were left behind in LA fires
