BMW is in the early stages of developing the next-gen 3 Series, and a new report gives us a clearer idea of what to expect from it.
Called G20 internally, the all-new version of BMW's best-seller will have to pack a heavy punch in order to fend off competition from the Mercedes-Benz C-Class and the upcoming fifth-gen Audi A4. Lower and wider than the current model (pictured), the G20 will feature a decidedly evolutionary design up front but it will stand out thanks to a more muscular-looking body, a longer wheelbase and a more aerodynamic roof line.
The cockpit will be assembled with better materials in order to surpass the level of quality offered by Mercedes-Benz and Audi. Expect the G20 to pack a long list of high-tech features including a remote-controlled parking function gleaned from the next 7 and a touch screen-based infotainment system that recognizes hand gestures. Additionally, the next 3 will be able to drive itself on the freeway and at up to 40 mph in stop-and-go traffic.
In Europe, the entry-level G20 will be powered by a 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine rated at about 135 horsepower. More expensive variants will be offered with four- and six-cylinder engines, and buyers will be able to choose from at least two plug-in hybrid models. At the other end of the spectrum, the M3 will pack a 500-horsepower straight-six engine fitted with at least one electric turbocharger and a race-derived water injection system.
