Why do dudes hate Paulie so much?
Pascal spoke with ESPN.com during training camp about preparing for Kovalev:
How excited are you to be back in a fight at this level?
I'm very excited. For me, I love challenges, and that's why I choose to face Kovalev. Because Kovalev didn't choose me, I choose to face Kovalev because he might be the king of the division, but I'm the cash cow. That's why he's coming into my hometown to face me. I'm bringing the good market in the boxing community. This is going to be a big fight and, with three belts on the line, this is the biggest fight in Canadian boxing history. I'm going to get well prepared mentally and physically to be the winner.
How impressed were you by how easy Kovalev's performance looked against Hopkins?
I was very impressed because nobody ever outboxed Bernard. He did it very well, but at the same time I think Bernard showed his age a little bit at 49. You can't expect to win a fight when you throw less than 200 punches in a fight. It makes no sense. Maybe Bernard was scared. Maybe he couldn't because Kovalev was doing something good. Who knows? But I will find out [on Saturday].
Kovalev-Pascal Videos
Look back on the rise of unbeaten light heavyweight titlist Sergey Kovalev entering his March 14 bout against Jean Pascal.
You have always had a great chin. Can you stand and trade with Kovalev in this fight?
I could but it would be very stupid of myself. I don't want to visit the canvas, so I'm going to box this guy. I'm going to try to outbox him.
One of your greatest strengths has been athleticism. But how much have you worked in recent years on adding new wrinkles to your game as boxer?
We always can improve in life. We always can improve significantly and physically with skill. I brought Roy [Jones Jr.] onto my team because I want to be the best in the world. And Roy gives me nice tips to polish my style, and that's what we are working right now. I think I have a very good style and I'm a crowd pleaser. But I need to polish my style.
How different is your style today from the two Hopkins fights?
I'm more aware of everything. Sometimes I was doing stuff naturally, but I didn't know why I was doing it because I was not sure for me. But with Roy, he explains to me when to do it and how to do it very well. Roy is a busy guy, but the thing I am very appreciative of him is that he still has time for me. He is down to earth and he's ready to pass the torch.
Hopkins used to refer to you as a four-round fighter. How hard have you worked to change that image?
Maybe I'm a four-round fighter because I am not taking any juice. [He laughs.]
How does it make you feel seeing lineal champion Adonis Stevenson on the outside looking in for two major fights in a row within the division?
Are we talking about Chicken-son? Adonis Chicken-son? I don't know much about Chicken-son.
Considering how boisterous the Montreal crowd can be, how do you stay calm and execute your game plan?
Honestly, you all know I can bang. But I can box as well. If I go out there and try to kill this guy, I might get killed. So I'm going to try to outbox him and use all my tools.
How much of a factor do you believe the crowd might be in swaying the judges if the fight is close?
That's not true. I faced Bernard twice [in Quebec]. Both fights were close and they gave them to Bernard. It's bulls---, but they gave it to Bernard. So everybody knows that when you come to Canada, you are going to have a fair shake.

Nice body shots by Porter.
