QB THREAD - 2x quarterbacky award winner: Lamar Jackson

You could argue for either Carr or Bridgewater right now. Both had bad week 1 games but bounced back nicely. Teddy had the stronger second half last season. Jameis and MM8 don't have nearly enough experience or game film to anoint them yet, plus they're both still raw rookies.

Outside of Luck do you guys think this young wave of QB's and the likes of Stafford and Cam will ever reach the level of these QB's in their primes or near the end. Let's say you split it at age 31 or 32. So Brady, Manning, Rodgers, Brees Ben, Romo, Rivers.

Is it possible we've been watching a golden era of QB's or will they be replaced? The top 5 QB lists have been filthy for a while now with the same QB's replacing eachother each year.

In one group (26-27) you've got Luck, Russ, Cam, Stafford, Tanne, Kaep, and Dalton. That's a pretty solid group but I don't think they'll touch the Brady/Manning/Rodgers/Brees/Ben combo.

I love the up-and-coming group of Teddy, Jameis, MM8, Carr, Bortles, and Johnny tho.

I asked this a couple days ago in the NFL thread and got some snide remarks but I don't think you'll ever see a group come close to what we have in Brady, Manning, Rogers, Brees, Ben.

these kids in college aren't learning a pro style offense and the ones who are, are being thrown into NFL systems. Brady, Rogers, Romo all sat and learned.

they tried doing that with Bortles but they had no choice. i think him and Carr have the mechanics to be the greats of their respected league some day. but the best then will never be the best like we've seen.

we take for granted the talent we've gotten to watch at QB over the last decade.

didn't see anything on other QBs, but Brady's snap to throw time averaged 1.97 seconds yesterday against the Bills. knew exactly where he could go with throws pre-snap yesterday for the most part. really surprised Rex didn't come up with something more troubling like he usually does. could be that he doesn't have the horses in Buffalo yet but they did the work against Indy.

There will be more elite quarterbacks..people were thinking the same thing about 12 years ago. There will be guys who emerge.

I both agree and disagree with what you're saying.

I agree about the talent we've got to watch at QB for over the last decade. It's been incredible.

I disagree about the young guns not being able to match the current crop. Even though he won rings beforehand, Tom really didn't begin to flourish (imo) until 2007 and beyond. Threw for > 3800 yards once and never hit 30 TDs. 2007 hits and he hit another gear. 2010 Tom Brady is one of my favorite QB seasons of all time, and he'd already been in the league 9 years by that time.

Same goes for Brees. Didn't start to turn into the Drew Brees we know until his sixth year. Showed flashes beforehand, but really turned it on after that.

Ben was held back when he was a youngster and, once again, after about six years, he took over.

Gotta give the young bucks time to grow. Doesn't help that the old farts won't retire.

That 04 draft was a nice bolster to the crop

Agree, mid 90s was pretty bad overall and it recovers nicely. There may be some down time but it always swings back

Brady is an all time talent. Greater then Manning, but do y'all think he hangs it up before a dip in play like Peyton or he'll know when it's time?

What we don't know is what the league, and systems will look like going forward.

Standard drop back "Pro" systems aren't as prevalent anymore in college, and you are getting more athletes at the position than regular throwers. All the way down to HS.

The 6-5 240 sling it 70 yard guys aren't really around as much as they used to be, we're getting a lot more 6-2/6-3 guys that can run and throw it good enough. Spread systems, etc also affect the way they need to throw, vs how they can get by thru the systems. Once you get to the NFL level, you gotta be pretty damn accurate, or you're gonna get shredded.

Manziel went wild in the SEC, and even with how "good" he looked yesterday, those were two heaves that somehow found targets. Outside that, he completed, what, six passes? :\

Those six passes? 62 yards.

Perfect example of what I'm getting at. Stats are shiny, but did he really play all that well? Is that the trend that will develop once these elites leave, and the game is such a wide open version of its former self with all the spread fields, and no contact, so you can be meh, and still get 200+ yards and 133.9 QB ratings, while completing really just 2 passes that had an impact on a 60 minute football game?

Iono. I know players always evolve, and the game does too, but I'm personally worried 3-4 years from now, what's coming down the pipe.

The last time Aaron Rodgers threw a pick at Lambeau Field, ball was snapped on the play by Jeff Saturday.

God damn. :x

Yeah Hoge said the Browns didn't run any drop back concepts with Johnny IFF, he said it was the first time he's ever saw that.

I'm thinking around the same lines as you, but I'd say that while players evolve, QB's are devolving and it's because of what you alluded to. The systems they play in college is for the athlete and when that guy comes to the NFL, these NFL coaches don't or rarely adjust and try to make them a prototype QB and it mostly fails. I think coaches will have to adapt the most.

Hey, they gotta do what they gotta do to get him comfortable, I just wonder how far that goes, and for how long over the long haul.
