1. I honestly don't remember, I think along the lines of I just kept finding more and more contradictions in the bible, so I just said forget it and abandoned it all together. Best decision I ever made.
2. I guess so, I don't want them to waste time believing in religion.
3. The Universe
4.Yes, just the fact that I'll no longer be apart of this plane of reality.
5. Nothing. Just like how you weren't conscious of anything happening before you were born, death is the same thing, just at the end of you life.
6. Yes
7. Yes, once again, nature, natural design, and the Universe.
You don't end up being an atheist ....it's the default position, you start out as atheist, you either stay that way or become influenced via indoctrination.
If you were to change the question to "why am I still an atheist?" the answer would be that by pure chance I was just fortunate enough to be born into a modern Western society with access to good scientific education and that generally speaking, my influences just happened to be more secular than religious.
Don't and won't have any kids so kind of a moot point for me personally. Hypothetically speaking though, if I were to have children they would be raised in modern Western society and be privy to all of man's current thoughts/philosophies on religion, both for and against (see above) I certainly wouldn't stop them from finding their own path though. (I'd just be more likely to read them excerpts from "The selfish gene" as a bedtime story rather than "Noah's Arc"
)
I answer to authority in the sense that I obey the laws of the land and generally abide by the moral compass of the society I live in, the difference is that I think of those morals as innate ...not God given.
I do not fear death itself, it's an unavoidable part of the circle of life.
It's the thought "how I will die" that holds fear (this applies to everyone) No-one wants to die a painful/gruesome death ...that's what worries ALL of us, religious or not.
The same as before I was born -nothing. I don't have any recollection of consciousness before I was born and I don't believe there will be any once I die. However, the thought of my atoms being once again distributed among the universe (Stardust) is far more comforting to me than being stuck in eternal limbo.
Where we are in our current understanding of the Universe, the mathematics alone (which is basically what our real understanding of the Universe comes down to anyway) suggest that there's a very real possibility of life beyond our own small rock.
However, I would say that in the grand scheme of my own life here on Earth, it's probably not worth worrying about too much, as it's unlikely that anything significant will be found in my lifetime (little green men etc.) Any life discovered by humans will almost certainly be "simple" ...but of course the thought of it being more than that is what is so wonderfully fascinating, the search and the drive to discover the new.
No, although I would never rule it out ...there is just no reason for me to. At this stage in our understanding of the Universe, there is ZERO evidence for anything beyond our own consciousness.
You folks raped and pillaged my "How to get to Heaven" thread
and I felt it was a cry for help/attention.
Long story short my common sense and ability to reason led me back there. How did you end up atheist?
I'm not a fan of indoctrination or brainwashing. I'll pass on being rationale, logical, reasonable, using common sense, and critical thought. Hope they'll be smart enough to know better. If they end up subscribing to any religion for w/e reason that's okay, I'll just laugh at them for it. No need to argue or hound them about their choice. Will pass along this belief to your kids?
An absolute one? No but I do recognize I have to acknowledge certain authoritative establishments and ppl to function in society unimpeded.Do you have an authority?
In what sense? Just outright fearing the fact that I'll one day reach my demise? No not at all. I mean we're all dying. As of now, I agree with this quote "Everything dies. You. Me. Everyone on this planet. Our sun. Our galaxy. And, eventually, the universe itself. This is simply how things are. It's inevitable... and I accept it." (Of course that can change, I don't believe in hard absolutes). Now that doesn't mean I want to die some time soon or that depending on how I die I'll take it in stride but it's just how things are, facts of life. I enjoy being alive, I enjoy living. I really like it, I probably can't even express how much I love it but at the same time I'm intrigued with the unknown; what happens after death, if there even is an "after" to begin with. I certainty don't fear that.Do you fear death?
Knocking up an ugly broad I don't love, getting hit by a train, da AIDs, etc. What are your fears?
I don't have any beliefs about that. There are a lot of interesting ones. I don't even know if there's an after as I've already said. What do you believe happens after you die?
I think there's a high probability and because of that I do believe there is/has been/will be life on other planets across the universe.Do believe in life beyond earth?
As of right now, nature, time, a few others dealing with quantum physics.Do you believe in any forces in action beyond human control?

i used to be atheist. then i identified as an agnostic.
Being agnostic does not in anyway address the question of whether or not you are atheist.I am not atheist, but I am agnostic. I am this way because I believe in science and evolution, but I also believe in some kind of higher power. I see no evidence for what is present in the bible either.
I've always been bothered by the fact that so many people consider atheism and agnosticism to be mutually exclusive.Being agnostic does not in anyway address the question of whether or not you are atheist.

Wow. God is good. Strong Testimony bro. It's good to see a religion thread that hasnt gone sour. I remember awhile ago i posted a thread about christian hip hop and i got MURDERED! lolSince you asked, I hope you just accept my answer and not try to rebuttle my reasoning because I dont wanna go back and forth and get off topic:
condensed version-
Long story but basically, I already knew bout God and Jesus and all that. Head knowledge. I was homeless , livin in a car, livin apart from my daughter, and im holding on to 3 braincells ( i smoke all the rest of dem) I know I needed to get focus and get my life in order. I felt I needed some help or a guide. All i knew was that book that my dad made me read when I was 10. That book that felt like punishment cus I just wanted to play and watch tv. So I get the Bible, and start reading it, this time I can understand most the heiroglyfics it was written in. I started not just reading but wrapping my heart around it. The b.s. 1 man 1 woman thing, I just started accepting, I dont have nothing else. i just was telling myself why not, just cus I dont understand it or can prove it dont mean it aint legit. eff it. Started justifying it, of course its gone be weired and higly questionable, God should operate supremely different from his creations. Started praying to God, talking to him out loud, (prlly looking crazy to thse who seen me in that car, talkn bout my life, this book, my future, what he need to make happen. Things just started happening for me. My girls godsister let me sleep on her couch Nove22 (2010) and then I got a job Dec. Then I saved and got my own place March2011. Then I got to see my daughter more (he was 2). Once I got my pad, I put the book dwn. I read it dilgently day and night cus I felt empowered and wise and humbled at the same time. But then, I was good , got my Flat screen, xbox, got my whip, Im set. Stop praying totally. Good lookin out God. Then I started fallin into old habits, my relationship with my girl SSTTRRUGGLLEED. I got paranoid, thought see was turning my daughter against me. I started fallin into depression. I looked in the mirror and asked myself is this the man you want you daughter to know? Ultimately, I wanted to be a better man, and people im around, and these material things weren't helping me get there so Feb 2012 i started reading and praying and trying t make ammends with God and asks for forgiveness for forsaking our RELATIONSHIP. And since then lifes been much better. I have struggles and troubles like everyone else. But Im never depressed or anxious, out f sorts or uneasy. I have a comforter, confidant, companion, caregiver, and friend that always there for me. People like being around me, lol, and I have a good reputation in my neighbrhood. Most importantly with both my daughters. They tell me they love me and I thank God everyday that 'they love the real me.
Yes, of course, which is why I added the that my morals are relative to the society I live in. What is acceptable in one society is not always so in another, or from one person to another. But generally speaking, the golden rule of "do unto others as you would have done unto you" has to originally be innate in us ...no society could have formed without it. Ultimately, it is rooted in the natural laws of survival and adaption.Do you believe ppl can have different moral compasses/ Different degrees? Or an absolute compass/One that is the standard?
(Like I steal cus i was raised around thieves so its normal, i feel nothing. but i belive/ feel killin is wrong)
These questions can be answered with a general understanding of what it means to be an atheist.Do you have an authority?
What do you believe happens after you die?
Do believe in life beyond earth?
Do you believe in any forces in action beyond human control?
I'm curious to know, what part of evolution do some ppl believe in?
- Growth and experience. watching things around me, unanswered prayers (not just my own), disturbing lack of evidence for tremendous claims.
- I will not. she has already started questioning on her own. "this is stupid, snakes can't talk, etc etc"
- Police and myself.
- I do not fear death. I fear not seeing my daughter grow up. I cannot be afraid of something I tried to bring to myself.
- Nothing. There's no evidence to suggest otherwise. Knowing there are extreme amounts of DMT pumped right before death, it could mean that the mind is suspended into a trip forever... that's just a theory I have though.
- Aliens exist. While there is no concrete evidence to suggest this that has been publicly released, it's naive to think we are alone in existence.
- No. No karma, no luck, no miracles.

Religion however tells us there is absolute morality and that it was instructed to us by God.
Evolution is essentially the change in genetic material within populations of organisms over time. This has been factually supported for over 150 years. What about this are you wondering exactly? Also, why is this in a topic designated for atheists?I'm curious to know, what part of evolution do some ppl believe in?

" da AIDs, etc." I gues you dont believe in Magic. lol
I didn't even connect the two.
Get it, AIDs, Magic.

I gotta assume ppl in here have been saying science disproves religion for this post to have purpose right?Does science disprove religion?
Science can neither prove nor disprove religion. Scientific advances have called some religious beliefs into question, such as the ideas that the Earth was created very recently, that the Sun goes around the Earth, and that mental illness is due to possession by spirits or demons. But many religious beliefs involve entities or ideas that currently are not within the domain of science. Thus, it would be false to assume that all religious beliefs can be challenged by scientific findings.
As science continues to advance, it will produce more complete and more accurate explanations for natural phenomena, including a deeper understanding of biological evolution. Both science and religion are weakened by claims that something not yet explained scientifically must be attributed to a supernatural deity. Theologians have pointed out that as scientific knowledge about phenomena that had been previously attributed to supernatural causes increases, a "god of the gaps" approach can undermine faith. Furthermore, it confuses the roles of science and religion by attributing explanations to one that belong in the domain of the other.
Many scientists have written eloquently about how their scientific studies have increased their awe and understanding of a creator. The study of science need not lessen or compromise faith.

But seriously tho, I was an Atheist as a teen solely because I rejected the "wild" stories depicted in the Bible. Didnt see how reincarnation made sense with a growing populations and every belief system I researched, I couldnt accept fully or sounded like b.s. I loved science from an early age and I stayed in that realm of reality, tangeability, and explaination. Ive been a Christian for 6yrs, now but I wanted to know a couple things:
How did you end up atheist?
Will pass along this belief to your kids?
Do you have an authority?
Do you fear death? What are your fears?
What do you believe happens after you die?
Do believe in life beyond earth?
Do you believe in any forces in action beyond human control?
Im not gonna discuss my beliefs, Im not trying to convert nobody (doors always open tho), nor am I looking to be converted. I know atheists believe in different things, I just wanted to hear concepts, ideas, or just gain some insight on how you see the world/life/existance.
