James Steven: He had a passion for sports radio
• James Steven dreamed of becoming a big-time sports radio personality.

A former reporter/producer at WDFN-AM (1130), Mr. Steven died Monday of heart failure at the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor. The Dearborn Heights resident was 28.

"Ever since he was a boy, he dreamed of working in sports radio," said his mother, Patricia Steven. "His ultimate dream job was to become the announcer for University of Michigan football."

He was hired as an intern at the radio station in 2004. Coworkers said he was a quick study and eventually worked his way up to handling studio productions of Detroit Pistons basketball games and Detroit Lions football postgame shows.

"James exhibited a lot of passion for the job and had enormous potential," said Rona Danziger, former program director for WDFN. "He lived, ate and breathed WDFN, and as time progressed became one of our primary go-to guys."

Because of budgetary cutbacks by the owners of the radio station, he was laid off in January.

Born in Detroit, he attended Crestwood High School in Dearborn Heights, where he was on the track team and a staff member with the school newspaper. After graduation in 1999, he attended Eastern Michigan University, where he worked at the university radio station and earned a degree in telecommunications in 2003.

Mr. Steven worked with the City of Dearborn Heights Parks and Recreation Department for the past 12 years.

Besides his mother, survivors include his father, James Steven, and brothers Benjamin, Eric and Matthew.

A funeral mass is set for 10 a.m. today at St. Linus Church, 6466 Evangeline, Dearborn Heights. Visitation is to precede the service at 9:30 a.m.

Burial is to be in St. Hedwig Cemetery in Dearborn Heights.
