Rap About Nothing: Hip Hop Chat Thread

Since when did Drake need the streets? From the beginning he never really aligned his self with that culture. The reason he jumped over everybody is the support from the suburban nerds and females (while having quality songs written for him). The same reason AK is poppin, him and drake are equals. They just both understand that and feed that audience directly.

The reason Megan is flopping is because the lack of a super poppin single (Bodak yellow). Sorta like the same reason cardi will struggle for continued musical success. The industry has been and always will be about hit records.

I never said Drake needed the “streets”. I said he can’t PUSH or A&R a street rapper, fans won’t accept that. I said if he promotes an artist similar to him. A cleaner image, Big Sean/Drake type clone he’ll be better off and more successful. I never said Drake needed the streets. Meek, T.I., Jeezy, Gucci can push street artist because of similarities. Drake can’t push a street dude. It will never work. But he CAN push someone similar to himself

If selling 41k for 24 min song EP is a flop then keep on sticking to stupid like a fly on ****. Your bias makes you dumb.

Ya boy Tory Lanez averages around that range w/ fully marketed promoted albums while on a major record label, but you not running around saying "FLOP".

Tory drops a lot more music than Meg and I think Daystar is his weakest (sales wise album to date, obviously). Just checked and he did 37k even after the clear industry blackballing, not to mention he announced the album literally 2 hours before it dropped.

Not giving tory any passes but on paper he's actually a much bigger musical act than Meg.

Meg getting a lot of good looks. She been the up and coming chick pretty much the entire time that Cardi has been gearing up for album #2.

Fact remains. She flops. Tory is a niche artist (whom I am a fan of) his biggest hit was a remake of a “Brownstone” song so, it really isn’t his song to began with. Megan is promoted to NO END. TV commercials, IG, radio, etc. yet, she not moving units

Meg is on the cover of times shes far from flopping ..I think covid killed some of her momentum music wise...She should still be riding the wave from savage remix with beyoncé..that was her bodak yellow moment

Musically, she’s a FLOP. I bet she’s basically broke right now.

Savage Mode 2 is one of the better put together albums, as far as sequences and number of songs go. Big change of pace from everyone throwing mad songs on an album with mad features.

Agreed. This project was done really well. These days I believe 45 mins is the sweet spot for this type of album. One of the better projects of 2020.

I don't know a single DVSN song no bs, my girl listens to R&B heavy and i don't think she's ever even tried to share 1 of their songs with me.

I've also never heard it when I'm out or even in cars passing by.

I do know the name of that counts for something but I can at least name 1 Baka song.

DVSN’s last album was fire.

Bumping “sliding” right now actually. The sequencing is ON POINT

People fronting on 21 & Metro right now, not being honest. This is high quality rap music.

I gotta agree with finessence finessence on this one. If you're trying to prove that maybe Meg is selling more in her regards to her time than tory is then maybe there's an argument but otherwise even the stats show that tory was technically selling more than Meg.

I do agree that Tory's numbers aren't the best for a dude that was signed to interscope but I'd also argue that he's had WAY bigger singles than Meg. I think he has a couple plat singles under his belt already. Meg might have 2-3 both of which feature some of the biggest artist in music (Beyonce and Cardi).

Tory is definitely a niche artist as well he's really a rapper who has way more commercial success for his R&B/ love tracks. He just alienated the majority of his core fan base and he still sold 37K. That's amazing all things considered.

It’s still early, and I’ll see if I’m actually listening a couple weeks from now, but this might be my 2020 favorite. Metro sliddddd on here.

I'm not a huge 21 fan but to be fair I left the album a little disappointed. It's cool for what it is but 21 has legit subject matter to talk about. I think people (me) were looking for an evolution in subject matter similar to Meeks.

21 has kinda broken through the dumb trap rapper image based on his interviews etc. I was hoping that would translate to the music more.

I still love *****es, guns, and drugs but we wanted alot of more songs like "A lot".

Meg is a SINGLES artist. Not an album artist. Rihanna first week sales be lacking too. ANTI did 160K, first week. A couple pop stars fall into categories like this.

I feel you, but Man, sometimes we just need fun, album slappers. This delivered

Listen, when they “push the button” with Meg....it’s up. She clearing 100K and a #1 billboard spot easily.

Told y’all this about Thug too.
