Rap About Nothing: Hip Hop Chat Thread

Album was cool. Don’t really see myself revisiting for now. The double album is always tricky and rarely works.

it's annoying seeing so many chronically online nerds focusing on Kendrick using the f-word instead of the fact that he's actually admonishing himself for doing so. Everyone now seems so accustomed to music being made for a particular audience or purpose instead of viewing it as the artists story that they've decided to share with you, it's not supposed to be perfect or inoffensive if it's meant to be an authentic expression of a flawed human being

i think rap music gets too much and also not enough flack for it's influences. You can't want to burn Kendrick for his brash introspection on Auntie Diaries and turn around and treat violent, misogynistic, irresponsible lyrics from a vast majority of artists as just a symptom of the culture and upbringing. The same should be true for Kendrick and his working through his own feelings about homophobia

Y’all gotta let people react to art the way they’re gonna react to it.

I love Auntie Diaries, but you gotta respect a perspective outside of your own. It’s people out there who have a completely different life journey. Sometimes we come to different conclusions.

Art should be the bridge to spark the discussion. That’s what’s happening now. All the opinions are valuable in that discussion whether I agree from my own personal perspective or not.

^ if people were actually listening instead of looking for something to be upset about, all of that is obvious from the jump
The thing that bothers me is that we know that we could all be listening with the same attentiveness and attention to detail and interpret and feel things differently. That’s the beauty of art.

I get it though. Art (the best art) is personal as hell.

It bothers me when we try to find reasons to undermine opinions outside of our own. Why not try to understand than to reject the perspective.

I’d say that’s part of the problem Kendrick was talking about.

“I’m done with the sensitive taking it personal.”

It’s like he already knew certain people would take things the wrong way and get upset.

I feel like he addressed a lot of things going on in society extremely well on the album.
