While we talking about bullet trains, Republicans been trying to axe Amtrak for years...

Amendment to Defund Amtrak

SEP. 6, 2017 | H.AMDT. 287 TO H.R. 3354

This amendment by Rep. Mo Brooks (R-Ala.) to the Make America Secure and Prosperous Appropriations Act, 2018 (H.R. 3354) would have eliminated funding for Amtrak’s national rail network, a vital transportation link for millions of people, supports thousands of good paying jobs and provides enormous economic benefits across the nation. The amendment failed.

We can’t even behave in traffic, at the airport, in the subway, on subway cars… bullet trains won’t be any better. Americans are completely f*** up in the head.

Mehiel's group supports a bill in Florida's legislature that would allow the state's Department of Transportation to enforce safety standards for rail lines like Brightline. At a hearing in Tallahassee, Brightline's Rusty Roberts said the company has been working with local communities to identify problem areas where it has upgraded fencing and other barriers. But, he said, doing so is expensive.

"That fencing in our case is over $200,000 a mile," he says. "So if you start regulating fencing in a blanket way, it's very costly for the railroads to do that."

That's just the fencing. In comparison, an overhead transmission line costs around $250k/mile.

This is why some public projects can't be undertaken by profit-driven, private entities. Corners have to be cut somewhere, and the general public will be lower than investors or potential riders in the hierarchy of stakeholders.
