Ruptured Achilles .... Going under the knife today

good luck !!! hope you have some good movies or netflix to keep you entertained...

tore mine playing flag football just running a route, corner pushed me and my cleat stuck to the turf, felt like someone threw a rock at my heel but it didn't hurt at all, just couldn't walk on it

i waited a month because of a random doctor didn't diagnose it right, surgical dr. almost passed out when i told him i was walking on it, had an mri then surgery 3 days later, i thinks its been 7 weeks, last 4 ive been in a cast and i get a walking boot next week

dr. told me i was gonna be in a cast/boot 3 months and then rehab, i just want to be able to run/jog again, miss it so much

I have a question.

Did you feel any pain in your Achilles before it actually ruptured? or anything else that
may have let you know that something was wrong?

Ballin 2k3... I guess the Achilles story is about the same no matter what. I caught a pass and made a jab step to drive baseline and it was like a sniper hit me. LolI'm a few hours out of surgery, still a Lil groggy. Temporary cast is on right now, withe the 1 month version going on in a week. My only thing is I don't wanna be the guy crutching around at the gym. I def still wanna get some lifting in. I guess I'm gonna have to tough it out

Nothing at all. Total freak accident

damn i was in the similar situation coupe years back when i tore my acl/mcl and shattered my knee. i had to wait about year for my insurance to get cleared since arthroscopic knee reconstruction was about 60k smh. we had 5k deductible and insurance took care of the rest.

but...

First and foremost, I feel like an idiot for not keeping my insurance. I've never really utilized it anyways so i was like @#@+ it when they asked me if i wanted to keep it when i left my job. I'm between jobs due to a move back to my home city currently.

you had the option to KEEP your health insurance and you didn't??? The $$** were you thinking??
All...of...this. Who opts OUT of health insurance? People sometimes take pay cuts in lieu of better health insurance. Smh..
All specialists usually require referrals in order to see them. Maybe they did you a solid on that Mojo, but that situation isn't typical.

Like everybody when switching jobs unless they are married.  That COBRA is like $600 a month.  If you have any kids, you looking at $1000+ a month.  And SMH at OP for playing ball with no insurance between jobs.

However, OP If I were you I definitely would go to an orthopedist which may require a referral. What you need right now is a walking boot ASAP. If you don't want to waste time and money on the referrals then purchase a walking boot from a medical supply store and wear it as much as you can for daily walking situations. The most important thing here is that your ankle needs to be immobilized. The walking boot sucks and is big, clumsy and not fashionable at all but it will help strengthen your Achilles and make walking a lot easier.

I currently have to wear mine for 6-8 weeks before I can do PT and it is exactly what the Orthopedist will recommend to do. So save yourself some time and money and get a walking book and then work on getting insurance while wearing the boot so that you can then be properly evaluated later.

this is how you do it:

move to california
have someone say you have been living with them.
start getting mail there. (anything, like phone bilss credit cards)
sign up for medical
go to e.r.
get bill
call them, say you can only afford 30% of whatever your bill is
usually they take it.

i think there is a way to beat the system, for others w/o insurance
i also never get sick...had 4 check ups in past 10 years.....recently went for one....didnt even remember what dr i used last so i had to shop for a new one......so i go in and they ask for my medical benefit card and id.....make a copy for the file.....chick didnt even look at my id when she made the copy, most people dont look at the id........now if you were my cousin and looked a bit like me i would have taken this risk for 5k.......the really risky part i think is just getting the new file made after that you're golden they dont ask for id every time you go....not even benefit card.....i had to make 3 visits and no proof of who i am.......just a thought, might have been just my rinky dink dr that i picked.........you might be able to get a few k back when you do your taxes.....

So now we have gone from OP paying out of pocket to suggesting health insurance fraud.  Nice.  Instead of OP losing money, he can go to jail and have a criminal record.

I don't have info on insurance and all that but I can give you some insight on the injury itself.

I fully ruptured mine on April 14 this year at a CrossFit competition. I was a triple/long jumper in college, played basketball all my life, and regulary do plyometrics on high boxes so I think it was bound to happen. Had surgery 10 days later on the 24. Was out for 10 days in a post surgical "cast". Basically just laid up for 10 days with my leg elevated and on pain meds. I also had a pain pump installed via IV behind my leg which pumped anesthesia into my leg around the clock for about a week. Watched the entire series of The Wire for the first time.

At 10 days I got the bandages off and was put in a hard cast for exactly a week. Once the hard cast came off they put me in a boot with heal lifts and I was instructed to stay non-weight bearing in the boot until further notice. Each week I was to remove a portion of the heal lift. Also I was told not to do any type of "rehab" yet and just to let the tendon heal. I had a follow up two weeks later. During that two weeks I did some research and found that early weight bearing and slight range of motion exercises actually speeds up the process. So I started to wiggle my toes alot, curl my toes down and pull them towards me. This helped with the numbness and i could feel the tendon begin to scar up faster. I took a multi vitamin and fish oil religiously. Also instead of using one leg on my crutches I began to bear about 10-20% of my weight on my injured leg. When I went back to the doctor last friday they were amazed at how well my scar and tendon had healed and told me I could ditch my crutches and walk in the boot. This was HUGE because the inconvenience of crutches begins to !*@* with you after awhile. I can now use my hands again for simple tasks that while on crutches were impossible.

So basically almost exactly 4 weeks post op I was walking in my boot and will begin rehab when I return from my cruise. Definitely take your time homie and BE PATIENT. Do what your doctor tells you. I was a little hardheaded but I didn't do anything stupid and if I ever felt pain I stopped immediately. It's a long road but if you stay healthy and take the right supplements you could possibly speed up your recovery. I was in excellent shape before my injury so I definitely think that has aided my recovery. Good luck bruh!
