So my friend just showed me this. I know many of you LOVE San Francisco after Grimlock's thread. Here's a chance to visit SF 1960's and even before.

Crazy thing is, many location still look the same...There's much more, so take your time and enjoy NTers! LINK: http://www.oldsf.org/#ll:37.806825|-122.420894,m:37.79578|-122.42387|15

here's a radical wiki of San Francisco's history for those interested. It's mostly user contributed stories of neighborhoods and events. Helps to contextualize the pictures in a historical sense so you get a feel of what it was like to live in San Francisco during those times.

VanNess was quieter and safer back then

Exactly what I thought when I saw the pic. I mean, dudes must have been on HAAAARRRDDD times.

Also, KQED did some awesome documenteries on a few neighborhoods in San Francisco a while ago. The series was called "Neighborhoods: The Hidden Cities of San Francisco"

The one on the Fillmore District was really good, and I'd highly recommend watching it if you have any interest in the geography of San Francisco.

It's really amazing to see how landscapes can change so drastically so quickly, and it's also cool to see the ones that haven't changed at all.

Geary before redevelopment. Notice all the Victorians that were torn down to build the Geary Blvd expressway.

Geary and Fillmore now

Market St and Embacadero before redevelopment--the construction of the Embarcadero centers. Compare the changes in scale and levels of buildings now to before. This area was mostly warehouses and pretty industrial.

This is what's there now

This was SOMA before redevelopment and the construction of the Moscone Centers and Yerba Buena gardens. Cheap residential hotels every block.

The old Embarcadero Freeway. Crazy to think that there was ever a double decker freeway looking at the place now...
