If this is off-limits, I apologize.

For some reason, I've never gotten into betting, and I think it's time to start paying some bills because of my sports intellect.

I guess I'm just curious what the best, most reliable site for a beginner is.

Thanks in advance, dudes.

what do you want to know?......i bet almost daily

i used to bet online but now i just go to the bookie and bet.....with basketball you have point spreads and over/unders......also you can bet money line

sportsbook.com is good too....its not as easy as people think......avoid parlays > then 2 teams cause anything more is just a sucker bet....and watch theline movements

Geez - bodog? sportsbook.com? Really? Such bad advice right off the bat... seriously, TERRIBLE... do not sign up at either of those.

go here for starters = http://www.sportsbookreview.com/Recommended+List/default.aspx

Those are the only books you should trust - there are HUNDREDS of other ones out there that are put up by crooks and real shady people that will take yourmoney and shut their site down... including sportsbook.com, who gets a D- from SBR.

Bodog is trustworthy, but they are amateur hour - in every sense of the word.. they put lines up extremely late, they offer terrible rates... it's justbad, no even semi-serious handicapper will use that book EVER.. there are so many better options out there.

I personally use 5dimes and betjamaica because they accept moneygrams, which you can send out and receive at most wal-marts for a small fee.

As far as actually get into betting - here's a few tips:

There is no easy money - meaning, if something looks too good to be true, stay away. There are exceptions, no doubt.. but anytime you have to question yourselfabout why you don't see the line the same way as vegas, consider this - they didn't build all those casino's out there by giving money away.

The sports betting world is much like the stock market - a lot of what you see is not so much what's actually going on, but moreso, the reaction towhat's going on.

If a line comes out and it's immediately moved up or down several points/runs - that's significant.. it can mean a lot of things though, and figuringthat out is your job as a handicapper.

Some more basic ideas to follow are this:

Find value in underdogs - 95 percent of bettors i've met are suckers for favorites, and will over-value them until the day they die... that meansthere's a lot of money to be made for the savvy bettor that likes taking points. The juice you're saving money on adds up, too, so you don't haveto be right nearly as often as you do with favorites.

Don't buy points or even half points... it's more a personal preference, but again, the juice adds up - if you only like a line enough to play it whenit's half a point more in your favor, how good of a bet are you really making?

Which brings me to my last point - there is ALWAYS another day... don't force plays, you will always be able to find something you like next time out, sodon't convince yourself you like something you don't.

Man - i could go on and on about this stuff really - i have another 100 tips in my head, but really.. you've just gotta get your feet wet. Hit the messageboards and what not looking for some good cappers (with proven, trackable records) and see how they're doing it... the smart ones are very systematic andtreat it as a business, they don't unload their entire bankroll on one game they really like - gambling takes a ton of discipline - i've readstories/articles that indicate a VERY small percentage of handicappers actually make money long-term... remember, to beat the juice you generally have to behitting at over 55% correct just to break even - seems easy enough to joe schmoe who never throws real money around on spreads, but give it a shot yourself andsee if you're really smarter than the guys getting paid the big bucks to predict this stuff.

Good luck to you - you can always PM me about more details if you like, i'm semi-retired right now since i'm a poor freaking bum right now... i'vehad my ups and downs, albeit not nearly as up nor down as others on this board probably have been... But i feel like i've learned a good bit about the"game" in the past 5 years or so if you're ever looking for general gambling advice... If you're looking for individual game advice, betterlooks elsewhere..

the main mistake people make is thinking theyre gonna make money because they think they have "sports intellect". sports betting is a whole differentanimal. trust me. theres just so many things you have to consider. like how the spurs are horrible against the spread on back to back games.

This reason will have you losing with the quickness. Craftsy broke it down to perfection. Betting doesnt have much to do about sports intellect. You have to watch the lines, see where Vegas wants it and who they expect to win. I have bet everyday for 6 years now and sometimes I wish I neverstarted

but I love it, and betting makes everything exciting

Real talk I was suped up on the Women's NCAA tourney because I had some 2nd half lines

But I've been sports gambling a long time and I'd reccomend thegreek.com as a sports book. The only sport where Vegas doesn't have the advantageis baseball. If you can cap baseball well then you can be a rich man. But yeah if you have any questions hit me up on AIM: dfresh244 like I said I have a lotof experience in pretty much every sport

cosign. huge spread changes are one thing i look out for. most of the time its a good time to fade the public when that happens. trap games are alsosomething you need to look out for. think twice before taking detroit as a one point fav. over memphis even if both have healthy rosters. vegas has so muchinside info its crazy.

There are much fewer opportunities to bet, but lines can be really crazy on boxing matches a lot of the time. I couldn't tell you why that is, but iseriously hit on about 60-65% of fights i actually put money on. Granted, there are really only like 3 or 4 big fights per month, so you can't really makeor lose a ton. Just something i've observed.

Betting on sports isn't about picking winners. It's about identifying misplaced lines and odds.

No hate, but if you got straight D's in community college, it might be smarter to put your spare funds in the money market instead of gambling with it.

Team 49'ers coming through with some good info now... and i agree with juan baller's first statement 150% - it's all about finding value!!!

i didnt know sportsbook.com was bad.....i won plenty of money on there and had fast payouts......but yea i be on covers.com alot to watch the line movementsand stuff and i look at wagerline.com to see how the line movements compare to the consensus of the public.....i'm guaranteed to hit at least 2 of my 3picks in the nba.....

now i got to step up my baseball game cause i never betted on it....ima prob study some stuff and start betting on it this summer

sportsinsights.com is a great site because it shows you how much the line has moved... who the public is betting on and how many bets. it also gives you weeklyanalysis of how the public gets dominated

Itseems legit to me, they've paid me quite a bit. Anyway, I'm good at football betting, but I'm new to basketball, and I'm not doing so hot. It's amazing how close Vegas is on about 90% of their lines. So many times have I either won or lost a bet by .5 pts. It's amazing.

On another note, I just got a promotional thing in the mail for oddsmakers.com. Don't know if anyone knows about them, but they sent me a free $200 to betwith. Only catch is I have to bet that money at least 15 times and accumulate $2550 to cash out. It's a long shot, but it's worth a try.

I don't really wanna be up in your guys' business like this, but there are dozens of better books than sportsbook - i'm stronglysuggesting you go away from them when it's so easy to use other places.

Here are just their last three reports from SBR, if these don't convince you that there's trouble with this book, i guess nothing will:

3/11/2008 06:30 PM
LinesMaker (SBR rating C-) and Sports.com (SBR rating D-) refund player's confiscated funds. Management of the Sportsbook.com Group tells SBR the player's funds were taken because he wagered the "free bets" for an extended period without giving the house action. Winning players are advised to use caution at Sportsbook.com Group books.

Player: I've had these two accounts for approximately 18 months and normally play the weekly $10 bets only after I've made a few bets during the week, maybe 40% of the time. I guess that in February, there weren't really any games to my liking so a little bored, I played the free bets and won about $20 each at Sports.com and Linesmaker. I did not use the two accounts to place bets on opposing sides of the free bet and I didn't receive any warnings before the accounts were disabled. Thanks again for your help

Sports.com (SBR rating D-) & Linesmaker (SBR rating C-) close player's accounts; confiscate $1,765
The Sportsbook.com -hosted sportsbooks are known to give multiple promotions and bonuses over long periods of time only to confiscate funds if the user is deemed to be unprofitable claiming he/she "took advantage" of an offer or did something "not in the spirit" of the promotion. This player was told he took part in "free bet abuse" which is the label given when a player uses two $10 free bets on opposing teams or has simply collected multiple free bet credits at different Sportsbook.com-hosted brands over an extended period of time. Sales agents tell players during the sign up process that each book is a separate entity, is not affiliated with other brands, and that bonuses and accounts with different Sportsbook.com-hosted brands are allowed. The Sportsbook.com group's risk management department audits winning accounts looking for reasons to confiscate the amount of money the player has won through its time with the book. The scam affected many players in 2007 when the operation debited accounts thousands in winnings on correlated parlays. Sportsbook.com kept player losses from those same wagers.

Linesmaker ownership is expected to reverse the decision of its turnkey provider as it has in the past. SBR has asked both sportsbook brands' decision makers to review the claim.

Sportsbook.com Group steals $5,677 from player
The player held accounts at Sportsbook.com (SBR rating D-), Sportsbooks.com (SBR rating D-), Sportfanatik (SBR rating D-), and PlayersOnly (SBR rating D-). He was debited for the amounts won over the life of the account totaling $5,677. Sportsbook.com cites "bonus abuse" as the reason for stealing these funds. The Sportsbook.com operation often labels players who have won money and utilized promotions in more than one of the many sister sportsbooks as bonus abusers. Sportsbook.com and sister Jazette books do not have rules against using multiple brands and using their promotions. It is often encouraged through cross marketing and the sales departments which market each website as an independent sportsbook.

Player: I did everything above board and was having a good season of NFL picks and now they've stolen from me. I guess I should have known better since you had it listed as D- but they'd fixed their payout issues over the last few months and I had never had other problems with them over 5+ years of active use. However, I have no email to send you since they didn't even bother to email me.

1/9/2008 10:27 AM
Sportsbetting.com (SBR rating C-) phone lines back up. The sportsbook's users have complained about the absence of a working phone line, not receiving email responses and slow-pays since the start of December. Sportsbetting.com switched to in-house customer service and financial processing at the start of December. Players have recently confirmed receiving payouts that were originally requested through the Sportsbook.com Group's service in November.
Update 2:20 PM: Two players who complained of withdrawal delays in December report receiving subsequent four-figure payouts in seven days.
