So I dislocated my shoulder for the first time playing ball a month and 2 weeks ago (May 17 to be exact). Was in a sling for about 2 and a half weeks. PT twice a week and still going. Pain level is still there especially when i try to sleep (wake up about 2-3 times during the night cause of shoulder pain). has any of you guys had the same problems as i have? what can i expect? please dont bring that "go to a doctor" stuff cause i will, i just want to hear from yall that have experience in them. thank you.

Sorry to hear dude.

Don't have experience myself, but one of my friends dislocated his shoulder, and after the first time it would pop out like once a season. He said the pain wasn't as bad as the first time but he had to go to the hospital every time it popped out.

Not sure if he didn't let it heal properly or if that's just how it goes with dislocations. I suspect the latter.

well when I dislocated my shoulder I didn't go to a doctor right away... I tried to put it back in myself with my friends. (WORST IDEA EVER). because of this I basically destroyed a lot of my nerve receptors in my shoulder area. It took about 3 months before I got any feeling in my shoulder. It's been about 2 years since my first true dislocation and the shoulder has MOST of the feeling back in it.

I chose not to get the surgery. It pops out once in a while but I've been fine for a pretty good while now. (knock on wood)

whenever it pops out the pain will linger for a while. maybe 1-2 weeks sometimes even more.

The first time I ever popped it out it took at least a month before the pain went completely away.

Be prepared for the shoulder that you popped out to be weak as !@##*

** it really depends on what kind of pain your having. If it's sharp pains that shoot up and down your arm then it might be that your Brachial nerve is pinched. and that's a serious issue, but if it's a slight pain that seems to lessen with each day then I say you're fine**

You def aint a hooper fam. Dislocated mine in a game, came back after it was popped back in. I couldn't shoot for a week, but I was fine and dandy after that. (knock on wood)

I did mine initially about 4 years ago in a semifinal game. We won, and finals was in 2 days and i wasnt gonna miss that, so i sucked it up and played through it.

Went through PT etc. afterwards....

This past march, did the same shoulder again...i think worse than the initial one. Went for an xray which revealed the likelihood of a bankart lesion. Happened in the middle of the season, so i sucked it up coz we had a good chance of getting to the finals, and just opted for PT and taping, and kept playing.

However, everytime there's a rather strong impact, with my arm extended, it momentarily pops-out but it would pop back in again. It goes painful/numb for about a minute or so, and just gradually goes away.

I have an MRI scheduled in about a week (season finished, we lost the finals), but my specialists prognosis is that i would need surgery to get it fixed permanently

She pretty much said that once u do your shoulder, you're prone to doing it more often in the future. So we'll see how bad the damage is on the MRI and go from there...but it's looking pretty bleek for me right now

even though you go to PT treatment you still have to be consistent and do your exercises at home. most of the PT patients that i've seen during volunteer don't recover as quickly because they don't do their exercises at home and would rather go out and do aggressive activities which eventually re-aggravates the injury again. if you are doing everything you can possible to heal you should go to your doctor again and get some charts to make sure that there isn't more damage than initially reported. hope this helped and good luck during recovery, i see a lot of patients who wish they can resume their normal activities and it's probably killing you inside that you can't do what you normally do.

also ask your PT if you should ice or use heat treatment, different people have different results to this

if u plan on returning to continuous ball play u may wanna consider surgery, consistent dislocation will cause ur ligaments to become more and more lax causing ur shoulder to be hyper mobile leaving you more susceptible to serious injury, and "popping back in" can leave u at high risk for vascular and neuro damage in ur shoulder and down ur arm as someone previously stated.

as far as now try taking NSAIDS if ur not already to try and cope with the pain and allow urself to recover, follow the home exercise program ur pt gave u if they gave u one as it'll strengthen ur rotator cuff and other muscle to leave u less susceptible to dislocation.

get surgery man, trust me. Dislocated mine and popped it back into place. I told my trainer in college that it was constantly hurt and he said i was born with weird shoulders

I couldnt even put my shirt on without it hurting, didnt get surgery till 5 months later, all my ligaments were done. Dr. tried to scope it but couldnt fix it like that so he cut me open. Just follow the rehab according to plan after that and take your time, it will be all good.
