SO I GOT BANNED FOR NOT TIPPING LOL

Do any of you tip your mechanic? If so how much? I do most of my own work with the exception of more complex jobs like rebuilding the transmission etc.

Again, the people we pick and chose to tip is so inconsistent.

We SHOULD be tipping our mechanics as well.

I agree with you. The list of folks who I don’t tip/think shouldn’t be tipped is probably way shorter than the people I do tip/think should be tipped but I will say that in general, folks providing a personal service to you should be tipped if possible. I wouldn’t say it is a universal requirement but EYE do it because since they aren’t frequently tipped, you stand out in their minds and as a result you get a host of perquisites such as expedited service, free add-ons, price breaks, more attention when they are dealing with you/your service request, etc. In my experience they will consistently go the extra mile for you as a result.

Small shop mechanic or one that works at a big shop. Nothing wrong with tipping a small shop or solo mechanic

My homeboy runs his own shop and sets prices to make a comfortable profit while still being one of the most reasonable shops in the area. Pays his dudes well and does great work. Setting prices appropriately nullifies this tipping nonsense.

I would chuckle if I saw somebody tip a guy at Jiffy Lube though. Those dudes barely do half the work you pay them for and try to upsell you a bunch of nonsense.

Mechanics prices are usually negotiable when it comes to labor and parts, they also overinflate their prices on the labor. If I can negotiate prices with someone, why would I be inclined to tip?

Is that the reason we tip?

By that logic, we should ONLY tip folks at restaurants but we know that isn't the case.

...I mean isn't it for the most part? What reason do you personally tip?
Restaurants employees are not the only ones that utilize this model.
There's Valet, bellhops, dancers, casino dealers, barbers, pet groomers, local musicians/dj's, bartenders that work events like weddings.

I'm not saying you shouldn't tip a mechanic. Its your money so tip however you want but how would you go about tipping a mechanic? Is it a percentage like the other industries? Because if it is, what if my bill is 2k after labor and parts. Is it expected to tip $400?

When it comes to services where tips are generally not provided, I still tip but basically look at it as a bribe. It is what it is |l

I only tip because of the social pressure.

As far as tipping a mechanic, it doesn't have to be % based. Just throw whatever amount of cash you can/will.
Never seen/heard of Society pressuring people tipping a mechanic, foreign to me.
I would rather barter my goods/services with the mechanic if need be.

Ok now this is confusing to me. No disrespect but first you said we should tip our mechanics which sounds like you believe is the right thing to do. Then said you only tip because of social pressure which implies you wouldn't tip if there wasn't pressure to.
Are you saying you tip mechanics because you feel they deserve the tip or because you feel some kind of pressure to? Mind you I have never heard of any type of pressure to tip mechanics.

Tipping mechanics is not a thing.

I don't understand why'd you tip someone who sets his own price, then charges for labor and parts

So that's why I asked what are the qualifications of those that we should tip.

Do we only tip restaurant workers because they barely make anything?

If yes, why do we tip barbers and hair dressers?

I was being facetious when I said we should tip mechanics. But I also don't have a logical reason why we shouldn't/ don't other than how much they already make. (Which I'm not sure matters)

So backtrack to my initial question. What are the qualifications of those that we should tip?

There is no social pressure to tip mechanics.

I am saying the reason why I tip PERIOD isn't because I give a damn about the well being of the person that took my order but because it is a social practice that I just fall in line with.

I feel this is true for most people that tip, which is why in the earlier pages of this thread I said people that act like tipping is this high moral act are lying to themselves.
