It's called an upward trajectory, she was already on it and it was an unstoppable behemoth that was rapidly gathering pace long before Kanye. If you're going to cite the VMA incident as a reason for her gaining sales & fans, then surely you also have to factor in her losing millions of sales & fans by the fickle One Directioners who were buying her albums but then shunned her after she split with the singer... or the Katy Perry fans who did the same after their "beef".
There are always these little "incidents" and "dramas" that pop up, but the trajectory has always been the same for Taylor since day 1... just because you didn't know about it, doesn't mean it wasn't happening.
Did the Kanye incident ever so slightly raise her profile amongst a certain demographic who otherwise hadn't heard of her at that point? ...yes.
Did it make her the global mega star she is today? ...not even in the slightest.
And yeah...
