Can someone explain what exactly a trade exception is? How can a team use one to its advantage?

Trade exceptions are like salary slots of the player going out. In this case, I think it will be J.R. Smith's $5.9M. So the Knicks have one year to use it to trade for a player that's making $5.9M or less.
