- My city is mostly flat, but the roads can be rough and rocky. I'm fine with walking the bike up hills to access nearby cities.
- Biking is also a means to photography for me - I stop and take pics often, visit restaurants, chill at parks, etc.
- I'm cool with either upright or bent down riding for long times. I imagine I'll be riding the latter way with a better bike. My current Mongoose feels fragile, so I avoid riding for too far.

Mongooses are horrible. Cheap aluminum, cheap parts, TERRIBLE assembly. It's not overstating to say that they are straight up unsafe, so I'm glad you're moving away from that. At least that Mongoose has apparently got you the bike bug, so that's what's up.

If you're going to be stopping a lot for pics, I'd get at least maybe a 3 speed or 5-speed. There are nice 3- and 5-speed city cruisers out there. Definitely gonna be a few hundred bucks, though.

Does this help at all?

Fits inside the frame. Drive side crank has an axel attached that comes through to the non-drive side.

It's cool, but looking to get more serious

Any idea where to start?
I typically ride around my NJ city (5 min outside NYC) on streets
Will need brakes, 53cm frame, not sure I can do fixed gear -- would I best be suited for single speed?

Budget is wide open

If you just want to ride in a chill upright position, you want to look at bikes with super relaxed geometry.

I honestly can't stand fixies, especially anywhere close to riding in the city.

The rear cog moves as the wheel moves. Some people will install a rim brake on the back, but that's not the norm. The norm is that if the wheel is moving, the cog is moving, so the chain is moving, so the pedals are moving, because the rear cog is a fixed gear, not a coaster.

Yeah, not cool.

And see, if someone were to accidentally hit him and kill him or even paralyze him, we would all mourn him as another biker fallen and 'Why don't these cars pay attention?' But the reality is he's zipping in and out of traffic with no helmet or regard for the safety laws and precautions.

I know I sound like an old head, but I'm tired of cars not respecting bikes, and bikes not respecting cars.

I am one of those fixie riders that has a brake and rides free wheel. I tried it fixed when living in SF and it's just not the best way to travel in that kind of city. I was always finding alternate routes that had no climbs which made the overall ride longer than it should. I give props to those guys that ride like that but now having a proper road bike, it's just so much easier and functional.

And I bought some more stuff too for whatever reason. I realized I wanted a bottle cage for my fixie and got one of those saddle cages with carbon fiber Bianchi cage. Crazy how these things all add up so much cause it was like $70 for everything just to add a water bottle to my bike. Sheesh.

The fixie craze was definitely raging back then. I remember not really caring about it as I knew it would die someday and it sort of did. Shops in SF and the general Bay Area at the time all carried fixie accessories but now, you would hardly see any of that stuff. There was even a local shop in Oakland that was near me that had the hardest time and closed right before COVID hit. I bet if they stayed open a month or so longer, they would have made a ton of money.
