Today's rivals preview...#7..

Head coach: Rick Pitino.
Last season: 27-9 overall, 14-4 in the Big East.
Postseason: Earned at-large bid to NCAA tournament. Lost 83-73 to North Carolina in regional final.
Breakdown: Probable starters | Backcourt | Frontcourt | Offense | Defense | Outlook
http://

Backcourt

Coach Rick Pitino has four guards who at one time or another intheir collegiate careers have been full-time starters. What coach in America wouldn't take his chances with that scenario?

Last year's Cardinals starters, Jerry Smith andAndre McGee, return. McGee's emergence forced 2006-07starter Edgar Sosa to the bench. Coming in to lend a hand andplenty of depth, if not vie for a starting role this year, is Mississippi State transfer Reginald Delk. Delk started in 59 of his 65 games with the Bulldogs.
Sosa and Smith have averaged double-figure scoring in a season, Sosa in 2006-07 and Smith last year. Delk averaged 9.5 as a sophomore at Mississippi State. So there is scoring punch, too. And all four have shot at least 37 percent from 3-point range in a season, so they can dial it up from the perimeter at anytime. Smith had a team-high 68 3-pointers last season, McGee was second with 52, and Sosa was fourth with 47.

The odd thing, though, is not one of the four is particularly adept at distributing the ball. Not one averaged 2.0 assists per game. But they all takereasonably good care of the ball. McGee led the team in assist-to-turnover ratio.

Sosa worked his way deep into Pitino's doghouse and had a hard time getting out. The head man expects a "big change" in the young guard.Pitino said some players take longer to mature and that Sosa, a Big East All-Rookie selection two years ago, "is finally understanding what team is allabout and is maturing into the type of basketball player I want him to become."

Frontcourt

Center David Padgett (11.2 ppg, 4.8 rpg, 2.0 apg) finished up his career, and Juan Palacios (6.0 ppg, 3.8 rpg) and Derrick Caracter (8.3 ppg, 4.5 rpg) aregone, too. For most teams that loss of production would be a major blow, but most teams don't recruit as well or have as much talent returning as theCardinals.

Earl Clark blossomed into a major scorer and rebounder as asophomore last season. He posted 10 double-doubles, and it wouldn't be a surprise if he nearly doubled that total this season. He was a dominant force inthe Cardinals' run to the Elite Eight, averaging 14.5 points, 8.3 rebounds and 2.5 blocked shots while shooting 62.2 percent from the floor during the NCAAtournament. As much as last year could be called a breakout year for Clark, bigger and better things are in store.

The other returning starter up front is Terrence Williams, the Cardinals' assist leader (4.5 per game) last season and another main scoring option. He's a 6-foot-6 all-court player who compensates for spottyperimeter shooting with his ability to put the ball on the floor, score around the rim, rebound and set up his teammates. Williams had two triple-doubles lastseason, just the third and fourth in Louisville history. With Padgett gone, the leadership role falls squarely on him.

The fifth starter probably will be five-star freshman SamardoSamuels, a 6-8, 240-pound power forward who will emerge quickly as a favorite because of his work ethic and diligence on the boards. He was ranked the No.9 overall prospect in the class by Rivals.com, and No. 2 at his position. He is a force down low, where he can score with a variety of post moves and rebound.Samuels already has NBA strength. He also passes well out of the post, one of Padgett's best attributes. Samuels will vie for Big East rookie of the yearhonors.

The top man off the bench up front should be another five-star power forward, Terrence Jennings. The 6-10 Jennings was the No. 18 overall prospect, andNo. 5 at the position. He's not as polished as Samuels, but he runs the floor very well for a player his size and can finish around the basket. He also isa big-time shot-blocker.

http://

Offense

Pitino has a variety of offensive options. The chief creator is Williams, who can drive and kick or score in the lane. Clark can face up from 15-18 feet orscore on the block. No doubt Pitino also will try to get the ball inside to Samuels on occasion.

conhead_seasonlook_30.jpg
http://
The Cardinals are less concerned about making the NCAA tournament and more concerned about getting at least one step beyond where they finished last year, the Elite Eight. The talent is there for this to be a Final Four team. Clark, Williams and Samuels could be among the best frontlines in the country by season's end. Delk is a big-time perimeter threat, an area that was a bit of a question mark last season. The defense was spectacular at times last season, and it doesn't figure to drop off. If you look at Louisville's losses last season, they typically came when the Cardinals had trouble stopping guards, against whom Smith and McGee almost always are at a size disadvantage. If Pitino can solve that problem the Cardinals easily could find themselves in Detroit in early April.
http://
Defense

The Cardinals ranked second in the Big East and 22nd nationally in scoring defense (61.5 ppg). Their full-court pressure and half-court trapping not onlywear out opponents but also force them to go late in the shot clock. The result is hurried shots, bad looks or turnovers. When opponents are able to set up,Louisville plays an attacking man-to-man and gets into the passing lanes.

Shoes to Fill

Padgett. Pitino ran a good bit of the offense through Padgett because of his decision-making and leadership. Those are tough qualities toreplace.

Must Step Up

Clark. He has NBA first-round talent. He considered leaving Louisville after last season, but he's back to ensure lottery-pickstatus.

Impact Newcomer

Samuels. You don't find many high school players as ready to bang with the big bodies in the Big East as Samuels. He will give as muchas he gets.

Overal I see/expect 20 wins, around a 5th BE finish.....and a 2nd round or Sweet 16 appearance.

The team should gel and start to play their best at the right time, JTIII does an excellent job with that. They'll lose to someone they shouldn't atleast once. Just how it is with a young team. But I also think JTIII as good as he is, is good for a win or 2 we shouldn't get. Team is comparable to the05-06 team that was young, made the sweet 16 and was a tough out in March.

Lineup
Wright
Sapp
Freeman
Summers
Monroe

Vaughn
Clark
Sims
Nikita

..good perimiter play, inexperienced up front. 1-9 can shoot the ball.

Season depends on Dajuan and to an extent Monroe.

It will not be the G'Town offense that people have been accustomed too. Principals obviously still in tact, but they will get out and run more. I firmlybelieve that. Saw it towards the end of last year. Wright/Monroe in the lineup change things compared to Wallace/Hibbert.

Thomas Robinson to Kansas.

That leaves the door open for Kentucky to snatch up Daniel Orton tonight. Is Wall supposed to be at their event as well?

My take on the schedule: I think it's a pretty weak OOC setup. We only play one real road game (I'm notcounting the game against Rice in Houston as a real road game), and 2-3 neutral games (South Padre Invitational, LSU in Houston). Too many home games for myliking. I like the matchups against Alabama and Arizona, though, as well as a potential matchup against Illinois or Kent State. On to conference play...very,very brutal opening 5 games. We'll be playing possibly the top 5 teams in the Big Xii in those first 5 games. I'd be very happy with a 2-3 record outof those games. It's very possible that we could end conference play on a 5 game winning streak going into the Big Xii tourney (possibly winning 6 or 7 ofour last

My take on the roster:
-We definitely have some talent on this team, but are lacking depth and experience in some positions.
-Denzel Bowles is expected to finally be healthy, which is great in my opinion. There was some buzz around the kid being pretty good when he was recruitedhere.
-Our frontcourt is lacking the most experience (and probably depth as well), as Bryan Davis is the only returning player that saw significant minutes lastseason. -Chinemelu Elonu has supposedly been improving greatly during the offseason, but I'm not really gonna trust that until I see it.
-David Loubeau drew a comparison to being a Darrell Arthur type player from Coach Turgeon, and I've heard many other great things about him from people notassociated with the program. Hopefully this kid lives up to my expectations.
-Our backcourt looks pretty good at first glance, with some pretty good experience. I'm expecting Dash Harris to make a pretty big contribution to theteam, but not until at least late in OOC or early conference play.

Depth chart:
PG - Sloan/Harris/Holmes
SG - Roland/Sloan/Lewis
SF - Carter/Roland/Walkup
PF - Davis/Loubeau/Bowles
C - Elonu/Davis/Bowles

I think our success is going to hinge a lot on how the freshmen (Dash Harris and David Loubeau) progress and play throughout the season. I'm looking forHarris to end up taking over the starting PG spot at some point during the season, with Sloan moving to his natural position at SG, and Roland becoming thefirst guard off the bench. Hopefully Loubeau can step in and take over the starting PF position as well, moving Davis to C and Elonu to the first big off thebench. I'm not really sure what to think of our depth this year...a lot of it is gonna depend on how players progressed over the offseason.

My prediction: I think we'll end up winning anywhere from 22-25games. We'll finish anywhere from 5th-6th in the Big Xii (behind Oklahoma, Texas, Baylor, Kansas...by default, since they're gonna win the North...andpossibly Oklahoma State). We'll make the tourney, win our first game, then the second game is a toss up, depending on who we draw. I'm hoping for aSweet 16 run at least, but that's a pretty high expectation.

Nolan
Greg
Gerald
Lance
Kyle

- I REALLY wish Zoubek could remain healthy and be able to contribute so that Kyle can move back to the 3, but I doubt that is going to happen.
- Maybe we move Jon back to the starting lineup and bring Greg off the bench? That could work, but I don't know. Nolan still has some work to do on that Jof his. His defense is nice though and we're gonne need him when we go up against the elite guards in the ACC (Doulglas, Rice, Lawson, Teague/Smith, etc)
- From what I have seen over the summer...Lance is still having trouble finishing around the rim, but he always gives 100% and plays hard. Hopefully he'llbe able to improve on his rebounding numbers.
- Someone is going to have to replace Demarcus Nelson. Not just his points, which can be easily replaced. But his defense and his ability to rebound from theguard position. He was basically a 4 playing the 2, rebounding wise.
- Jon Sheyer might just be my favorite player on the team.

Should have another nice year, barring injuries.
- Pocious....I don't know what to say about dude. He shows flashes, but hasn't been healthy his whole career in Durham. He would definitely be avaluable asset when healthy.
- As a team, we have to commit to rebounding. With our lack of size, this is our Achilles heel. And the other teams know it. We are rather frail on the block.
- Miles Plummee - If he plays like he did over the summer, I would prefer that he RS and just get in a serious weight program. However, I think this is just acase of a kid being more comfortable in a structured game. He will get burn because of his ability on the offensive end, but he needs real work on D.
- OC (Olek Cycz) will be a crowd favorite and is a tough guy on the block. Strong, tenacious with no fear. He will try to dunk on your whole team. I like that.We need that from a 'Big' guy. They got him listed at 6'7 but I don't know about that..Dude looked about 6'5 when I saw him
- Elliot Williams is an explosive athlete. Can really get up and down the court and finish. Needs to really work on his ball handling if he wants majorminutes. Athletically, he has the tools to replace 'Marcus but the question is does he want to do it. But, it doesn't matter though. If he doesn'tcommit to playing D, K will sit his !$$ on the bench. See: King, Taylor.
- Gerald Henderson will break out on a national level this year. I just have that feeling. Towards the end of the season, he went from 'W.T.F is GHdoing??' to actually carrying the team in some games. This is a money year. And with the teams that we play, or have the potential to play OOC, He canshowcase his skills. I think he bounces after this year if that's true.
- Kyle Singler is the goods. Can do anything that you ask of him. Is he the most athletic kid in the world? No, but he is fundamentally sound and can score ina variety of ways. And he has heart. He's definitely playing out of position which messes him up since he is 3 that is asked to match up against 4'sand 5's every night.
- Greg Paulus - Doesn't quite get the credit he deserves. The scape goat for a couple years, he put together a VERY solid season last year. And hit anumber of big shots for the Dukies. Depending on how the starting 5 shakes out, he may be asked to become more of a scorer than he was last year, and he wasshooting lights out last year hitting his 3's at a pretty good clip. He's still slow and pushes off too much, but if you can't see the improvementthat he made, you're %*+$$@@ blind. Oh, and Greg, I still remember you not passing the ball up court to JJ for the potential game winner at the end of theDuke/G'Town game 2 years ago.

- I expect us to have a regular season similar to the one that we had last year record wise. I think we make the Elite 8 and POSSIBLY a final 4 this year, butour lack of an interior presence will hurt us again. Some don't like the PHX Suns style O that we are running now, but you have to adjust to the talentthat you have on your team. And as currently constructed, this is the way that were gonn have to play to win games.
- Interested to see if the loss of Johnny Dawkins and the addition of Nate James to the staff will have any effect.
- McClure will play his usual role. Nothing really to add here. Though he may play less than he did last year now that I think about it.
- We still have trouble w/ penetrating guards, but I think Nolan can help w/ that. So he needs to be able to stay out of foul trouble.
- I really must give Coach K his props for last year, cause we did WAAAAY better last season than I thought we were going to do.
- And one final note...2010 is going to be %*+$$@@ SICK for the blue devils....

Some say you're Lucky you still have Nolan.
Yeah, I remember reading that last year, around the time when Taylor King left. And I'm sure JD's departure didn't help any. But,I'm glad he stayed...

Some say you're Lucky you still have Nolan.

That's a small team, but that's ok in the ACC.

I expect a lot of henderson and Singler this year..

I go with Elite 8, too.
