6-10 Daniel Orton commits to Kentucky
LEXINGTON, Ky. - The pageantry of the University of Kentucky's Big Blue Madness moved Daniel Orton, and the outpouring of affection from UK fans got his attention.
But Orton, a senior center from Bishop McGuinness High School in Oklahoma City, had made up his mind to attend UK before any of that.
Orton made up his mind on Friday, when Kansas coach Bill Self told him the Jayhawks had wrapped their 2009 recruiting with the commitment of power forward Thomas Robinson.
"Kentucky wasn't a backup plan, but it still made my decision a lot easier for me," Orton said at a news conference today at the Hyatt Regency.
Orton announced his decision at the end of his official recruiting visit to UK. He and his parents spent Friday night at Big Blue Madness, where fans chanted Orton's name. He played pickup
games with the current Wildcats on Saturday.
Orton, a 6-foot-10, 260-pound center, is a five-star prospect according to Rivals.com and Scout.com, and both services rank him the No. 3 center prospect in the class of 2009.
Scout ranks Orton the No. 12 player overall in the class of 2009. Rivals ranks him No. 22.
About two dozen UK fans showed up for Orton's announcement, as did several current Cats, including sophomore big man Patrick Patterson, whom Orton said he could complement as a high-post player or replace in the low post if Patterson elects to enter the
NBA Draft after this season.
"I really don't know," Orton said when asked if he expected to play with Patterson at UK. "It's his decision, but I would love to."
