I don’t think NIL is the reason most people enter the portal, though it definitely can play a role in where they end up.
Transfers no longer having to sit a year is the real sea change for portal purposes. Now P5 schools can go get experienced, proven college guys to fill out a roster rather than taking chances on guys straight out of HS. This trickles down to the HS guys ending up at mid majors, getting a chance to shine, and then transferring “up”.
Some of these mid majors may even be able to toss some NIL money at their top guys, but any difference in money can be made up by the increased exposure/better opportunities to play professionally.
Mack is the goods, will be a great pickup for the right high major school.

First couple of years yea, but I don’t see why SMU couldn’t be decent in ball. Smaller private school but in a nice city

I've been a Carolina hoops fan since a child so I will always want to see the Heels win.
But it's PURPLE AND GOLD UNTIL I DIE. BEST college town in the STATE. Our players on the team frequently played pickup with us in the rec and we gave them problems on the regular.
That's when I knew we weren't a serious basketball program. I don't care it's pickup y'all should be blowing us out.
Idk how I could gloss over this. You’re saying at the rec y’all would be beating the actual ECU team in pickup?
Every now and then some guys from the 2017-2018 UNCG team would come to the rec, bust out *** and talk hella **** in the process lmao

Yeah we would lol. I mean if it was a full regulation game we would lose for sure. But a game to 12 counting 1’s and 2’s it doesn’t take much lol.
And we weren’t bums everyone played high school ball, a few guys had played with Ingram in Kinston, another one won a state championship with Apex we had some guys who could hoop.
Most of the time it would usually be 2-3 basketball players who were bench guys and a few football guys since all the athletes hung out together. If we played 5 times they won 3 and us 2. Each game was close though.
