The MMA Thread: DON'T ASK 4 STREAMS & NO GIFS- Cannonier, Imavov, Reyes, Rosas on NOW

Not the tools, the Basic stand up fundamentals.

It's not instinctual, its learned.

tools can't be taught, fundamentals can.
And as a fighter who has to fight more than 75% of your fights on your feet, the least you can do is tuck your chin, move your head, give angles and levels and move laterally instead of straight lines

This.

Last night was cool in terms of the war that was lawler/mcdonald but if i wanna see a bloody brawl and a buncha haymakers ill turn on worldstar. Im tryna see the best of the best. Tacticians. Clinical finishing. Seems like its rarelyyyy there for UFC fighters. Is the pay that bad they cant get better trainig yet? Its been like a decade. Im tired of seeing "contenders" that have glaringggg weaknesses in their games.

Albeit im a casual fan but still. I aee why theyre going the theatrics route theres not too many highly skilled highly talented fighters out there

Bones screwed the pooch. Now they gotta be all in on Connor and hes def gunna be on his back against elite comp.

I think I found the issue brah :lol

Dude took one fight (where Mendes took the fight on 2 weeks notice) and used it to say the past 10 years MMA been lacking tacticians and clinical finishers

your knowledge is rudimentary if you watch robbie lawler and only see "a bunch of haymakers"

mendes on a short camp definitely hurt him. but let's not act like connor spent the entire time training to fight mendes. not as big a disadvantage as mendes may have had, but it's something. it goes both ways.

connor showed his wrestling isn't close to where it needs to be...but he kept his composure. stayed calm. i thought that part was impressive. let's see how he builds off this. not going to happen overnight, obviously. might not happen ever...but the guy is fun to watch. watching tim duncan over and over again can get boring. good to have someone come mix it up and actually do it effectively.

and before the fight, it was no way connor beats mendes. connor wins. now it's no way he beats frankie. don't think that's fair to say. personally i hope aldo is ready. i want to see that fight. i don't want to see someone just try and lay on top of connor for 30 minutes.

Listening to Jay all these years and one thing still true, he ain't the sharpest person around.

Who ever said this was boring are either blind or don't know what they are talking about.

It's GSP :lol

Nick has shown many times to be a BJJ practitioner against others. My point was that Conor didn't try to do anything at all to either escape or attack off his back

Conor doesn't have solid wrestling
I agree. And I respect GSP as an athlete. Despite not being a high school or collegiate wrestler, his TDs were legit. Some would complain that he was a great point fighter.

As far as the fight goes, the UFC had to save the card with a Connor McGregor fight. Personally, I think they could've done better with a Diaz/McGregor fight. But Mendes took the fight on two-weeks notice and by that point, Connor's camp was geared toward fighting Aldo. There really shouldn't be any complaints, especially on such an exciting card with amazing knock outs, exchanges and a possible FoTY.

No to Diaz v McGregor

Imagine the outcry if they handed McGregor a washed opponent like Diaz

Mendes had his chance, albeit on short notice. He won't even make excuses himself

Agreed. I would have kept complaining about Conor and his sorry opponents. He beat the number 1 contender time to give him props whether you like him or not

FOTN went to Robbie/Rory
Performances of the Night went to Pickett/Alamedia and Conor/Mendes

Haven't seen reports on earnings yet

Mendes and Pickett didn't get any bonuses, connor and Almeida did

Reebok sponsorship pay is out. Lawler took the most with 40 gs

That Lawler vs Macdonald fight tho.

Instant classic.

Gutsy performance by both guys. Lawler's final form is scary.

I never understand how they don't have the fundamentals down but it's so common place that I believe it has to do with getting a late start learning stand up.

Wrestling 1st guys have a hard time learning the nuances of boxing

This is why Frankie Edgar is so damn appreciated.

This is why Frankie Edgar is so damn appreciated.

He does every little thing right.

When he shot on gray in the fourth round and they scrambled and he threw the little uppercut as they broke that landed or when Ben was swinging wide with his punches in the second fight and he stays low and fires strict down the middle to drop Ben

He doesn't just strike well or wrestle he does it all well together and to make it worse he's fast, has great cardio and the heart of a lion

Imagine if they handed Kimbo a washed up opponent like Kimbo? Or imagine if they handed Randy Couture, a two-time champ, James Toney?

I appreciate the Mendes substitution but in the end, it didn't really matter. It was the Connor McGregor show. Most came just to see him fight and brash talk. Diaz would've fed into the trash talking and it would've been entertaining to see them go back and forth. It also would've been a stand up war (or quick TKO/KO for McGregor).

And Frankie has great boxing. His "problem" is they're pillows like the Diaz Brothers. He has high volume and decent accuracy.

Def not pillows, he dropped Ben twice, knocked out gray when he hadn't been knocked down in a fight, rocked oliveira as well. And dude he fought right before the first bj fight.

Not saying he is a power puncher but he prefers landing more shots than looking for the ko
