The MMA Thread: DON'T ASK 4 STREAMS & NO GIFS- Cannonier, Imavov, Reyes, Rosas on NOW

holy hell just watched rockhold weidmans promo run, rockhold really needs to shut up, he's cringeworthy. hope weidman or someone else shuts him up soon. Would be amazing if non trt vitor still beat him lmao

who said those are on main card? im pretty sure we're gonna have a couple more big fights added. I am anticipating Bj's return as well on this

U got lawler possibly, jones/osp winner vs dc possible, there's a couple options avail. I don't know what u were expecting but 2 title fights granted 1 is interim, diaz/conor 2, former hw champ cain and browne, former ww champ hendricks isn't bad as of now.

100 was a tad bit better in terms of overall main card. only the main 3 fights excited me on that before it took place
Idk, if they move Browne and Hendricks to the under card that'd be fine with me

At this point they have three main fights that aren't compelling to me. Two rematches and a women's title fight that doesn't excite me. The interim title means nothing, lol that ain't no title fight

200 was supposed to be 100 on steroids though...

If they put some actual title fights on I would be happy. Like rda, lawler etc

Intentionally waited over a month to dissect McGregor vs. Nate Diaz after rewatching the fight 4 or 5 times. The casual viewer saw Conor McGregor overload on his shots while striking. Some in this thread also said "Notorious" showed poor BJJ. I wanna point out a couple technical things I noticed under further scrutiny.

Conor did not measure his punches well, that's true. He was putting maximum effort into every strike, a strategical error on his and Kavanagh's part. SBG camp expected to knock out Nate Diaz with one punch. Disregarding how tough Nate is and the chin he's displayed in previous fights. Especially in a 5-round main event, McGregor definitely needs to learn conserving his energy and pacing himself. Not every opponent is going to go out cold quickly like Poirier or Brandao.

Why was Conor using the spinning back kick? Because Nate Diaz was smart and beginning to circle away from Conor's power hand (left). The spinning back kick, in this case, is a deliberate attempt to force your opponent back to their right, into your power hand.

Another flaw in McGregor's striking besides overloading his shots against Nate, was he's currently too left-hand dominant of a fighter. The more tape opponents watch and the more flaws become revealed, Conor will have to transform and transition into a more versatile striker that isn't so left-hand dominant. There's an element of predictability that erodes long-term success. Particularly if McGregor is serious about being a multi-weight champion. When Conor leans left, uppercut. When he leans right, overhand left. For someone who prides himself on movement and unpredictability, that has to change moving forward.

The biggest thing people weren't talking about after UFC 196 was Conor McGregor's stand-up defense. McGregor's defense is purely predicated on slipping punches with trunk movement. That's all good and well, fairly effective in R1 vs. Diaz (Conor won 10-9), the issue becomes when your cardio fails you. Trunk movement is grueling, tiring, empties your gas tank rapidly. That cannot be your only source of defense as a world champion. McGregor keeps his hands low and doesn't parry punches. We witnessed this in R2 as Conor tired, he started failing to slip punches effectively. Trunk movement defensively coupled with throwing powerful shots created an inefficient game plan.

Another focal point I'd like to address, is Conor McGregor a horrid grappler? My answer is no. In R1, he actually swept Nate Diaz. How did he do it? With a variation of the X-guard, made famous by Marcelo Garcia. McGregor used an element very rare in professional MMA. A lot of regular grapplers don't even know about or how to use it. It's called the Curu-Curu guard. Supposedly founded by Rodrigo Pagani. It's very uncomfortable for your opponent. In the final sequence you're essentially pressing your foot against your opponent's groin.

Does the rematch make sense? It does if you're Conor McGregor. He's reportedly obsessed with exacting revenge and proving he can beat Nate Diaz at 170 pounds. Kavanagh said Conor rewatched the 196 fight numerous times even before the post-fight presser. In McGregor's mind, I think he truly believes the loss was a mishap in strategy not that Nate Diaz is the better overall fighter. It also makes sense because Conor is going to be paid handsomely. 196 did numbers to say the least, on the strength of the main event. His featherweight title remains safe while Aldo and Frankie scrap for the interim. McGregor loses worst-case scenario, forced to drop back down to 145 pounds to defend his belt. Win? And we're back to discussing a potential title shot at 155 vs. RDA or 170 vs. Robbie. Either way, I wouldn't be surprised if Conor McGregor fights once more in the Winter, win or loss.

i dunno if it was rogan that mentioned it or who, but they said Cain/Browne might prelims featured bout. Regardless of the interim title tag or not Aldo/Edgar 2 is very intriguing to me esp since i like both and the first fight was very close. 3-2 for Aldo imo with the deciding round being close. Also Frankie has gotten better since and Aldo seems to have taken a step back in his last 2 fights, getting dropped in both. It sets up an interesting fight with Conor regardless who wins if he comes back to 145.

Im expecting another big fight or 2 atleast, if not 200 isn't as special as 100 except there's a name or two in every fight.

If yall rock with the card, that's awesome I wish I could feel the same

When it comes down to it, the main event at 200 is the most problematic issue for me. You have the 145 champ on the same card as the next best two contenders who are ready and healthy. Yet the belt isn't being defended

Frankie shouldn't have to fight Aldo to get a title shot. Aldo arguably deserves a rematch

While Cain and Hendricks are still names and relevant, Browne and Gastelum are underwhelming matchups for me

If they add RDA and/or Lawler against someone legit it changes things. I would like to see fresh matches and not rematches however, since the main and co main are rematches

That's sus of Dana to give Connor a rematch but not Holly :{

It feels like he's punishing her. Holm refused to tap! She should have got a shot at 200.

Not only did Holly not tap like a true warrior.. The fight went 5 rounds to the very end before Taint caught her with that rear naked.

But Holly don't do numbers like Conor. If that was Ronda losing the exact same way Holly did I guarantee the rematch would have been announced that night. He is punishing Holly for wanting to fight and stay active, what he was mad she was doing but praising Conor for it :{

I kind of understand it because Holly had JUST won the belt.

And I feel like it's easier to give Conor the rematch because it isn't a title fight in a way. Conor didn't lose the belt he'd just won. He took the challenge of moving up and still taking the fight after RDA pulled out.

Even though it's coming at the expense of the FW division. But he had a good B plan with having Frankie/Aldo go again.

Honestly, I used to kind of say it in jest, but it REALLY does feel like they are keeping Conor FAR away from Edgar.

At this point Miesha bae's managers and holm's managers are saying different things. Bae's people are saying she wasn't offered a rematch. Of course the ufc could clear all this up but won't say anything.

And if the UFC said anything they would have no issues lying to throw their champ under the bus

I wouldn't be surprised if they told both sides different things. Those are 2 fighters they treat like crap. They only care about one fighter in that division.

UFC would side with Holly's crew 100%.
Not true. UFC has major issues with Holly Holm's management team. Dana White has very publicly expressed his criticism for the way he perceives their handling of Holm. That coupled with Holly not heavily campaigning for the Tate rematch, probably led to Nunes getting her chance at 200. There's also the argument Holm wasn't a long-time champion (never successfully defended her belt after beating Ronda), but the UFC hasn't shown any logical pattern in terms of granting rematches. Like if healthy, Robbie vs. Condit II should've been first fight booked for 200. FOTY and a bout all MMA fans desperately want to see again.

Nunes has an extremely singular approach. She blitzes her opponents early. Nunes always starts fast and strong but fades so hard as the fight progresses into the deeper rounds. Someone as tough as Miesha, who can take damage no problem, could be able to finish and break Nunes' will later in the championship rounds.

Is Robbie injured? Surprised we haven't heard about an upcoming bout.
Besides the 2-month medical suspension after 195, there were no reported injuries for Robbie. I wonder if the UFC is intentionally giving "Ruthless" extra recovery time after back-to-back wars with Rory Mac and Condit. Both 5-round title fights at that. Also think it's possible the brass doesn't know what to do with Lawler at the moment. As I stated, best option is an immediate "NBK" rematch. The fighters are open to it and the fans want it. Condit contemplated retirement but an instant title shot and sizable payday likely change his state of mind. The other option the UFC probably floated was a hypothetical, if Conor defeated Nate at 196, McGregor vs. Lawler superfight for the 170 strap on the UFC 200 card. Then there's grumblings of an imminent GSP return late-2016. While Woodley sits and waits restlessly for his shot, not caring that they are/were ATT teammates.

Don't want to see Penn or gsp at 200. Not sure it would end well for either one of them. Way past their prime. Nothing to really prove
