THE OFFICIAL 2024 - 2025 DALLAS COWBOYS SEASON THREAD || 3-6 Next Game 11/18 vs. Texans Monday Night Football

Had him as the #1 Offensive Guard

Tyron - Martin - Frederick - Bernadeau - Free is pretty beastly.

You had that dude ranked #1 on your board bro.
Heck of a job!
I have to disagree with the starting 5, because I think Martin will replace Free at right tackle.

Here's a NFL.com video of our newly drafted soon to be Pro Bowl offensive lineman.
Zack Martin video

He could but two reason why I think not.

1. He's undersized. Very small compared to most Tackles. But since he isn't on the Blind Side, he may get away with it.
2. Free had his best year ever. Went from LT to RT for Tyron. Might hurt him, and he might fall apart if we move him again. Would basically say we don't have confidence in him even if he has a great year.

Free doesnt get to the second level fast enough on run plays from what I've seen.
He had a good year, but thats being based off the horrible year he was coming off of.

Even if we do switch them.. I still like the line..

A damn guard... Ugh.

Johnny, one of the safeties, or trade out. Seemed easy.

Martin is a good football pick

But they could've gotten their future QB at 16

Even if we do switch them.. I still like the line..

I would prefer keeping Leary at LG, with Free and Martin splitting time at RT.

Should've taken Manziel
I agree, but since we didnt we got a four year starter on the OL at Notre Dame.
The only OL in school history to be named offensive lineman of the year four times(nobody else won it more than twice).

Martins a good football pick I'm just bummed out Manziel was there and we passed

I'd be fine with that if we had some more depth at OG, but there isn't any other Guards left. Leaves us thin if Leary or Bernadeau gets injured, or basically doing the same thing we could have from the beginning.

@chiacrack Don't get me wrong, I was counting down the hours until we drafted him since about 2pm today.
As it got closer to our pick, I could feel it in my gut we weren't going to take him.
I would have loved seeing him with the STAR on his helmet.

I knew we weren't taking him what a ****** feeling too

Martin will be good but Dallas will regret this

Why take Johnny? Let's say Garrett gets fired, who's to say the next coach is going to want Johnny .. We needed to make a smart pick and we did it. We can find a QB like Murray later on ..

Wow... Man Deone Bucannon is gone.. I love him, but that's a huge reach..

But I did really want him.

Also was right again had Bucannon as the #3 Safety ahead of Ward. Kiper had Bucannon like 20 spots back in the top 100.

Man, that was horrible :lol

Early in the year, felt like no one was high on Donald like the Cowboys/Cowboys fans/Dallas Media was, seemed like we were definitely going to get him.

Then, the past few months, after the senior bowl, everyone sees him for what he is and it looks like we'll have to trade the entire draft if we want to have a shot at getting him.

Then comes draft day, he drops and drops and drops and gets all the way to pick #12, NYG, which would be the absolute worst case scenario to have him go there, they pass. 8o 8o 8o

:smokin :smokin :smokin

Here comes STL, a team already with a great Dline and other needs :Nthat, only need them to pass and then Pittsburgh for us to be able to get him......... Andddddd..... they select him

:{ :{ :{ :{ :{ :{ :{ :{ :{ :{ :{ :{ :{ :{ :{ :{ :{ :{ :{ :{ :{ :{

So many highs and lows :lol I'm happy with the Martin pick tho, our Oline is about to be something serious, it already was before the fact. 3 of the last 4 first rounders have been Oline guys, maybe JG is getting through to JJ 8o

Nah.

First Look: Cowboys Rebuild The Great Wall Of Dallas By Selecting Zack Martin

http://www.bloggingtheboys.com/2014...tin-scouting-report-rebuilding-offensive-line

Man, Dallas is going to have a really expensive offensive line come 2019.

That might be the only negative thing to say about this selection; and wouldn't that be a great in-house problem to have.

With their first pick of the 2014 draft, the Dallas Cowboys have selected Notre Dame offensive lineman Zack Martin to join the fold. After ignoring the offensive line in the early rounds of the drafts for so long, Jerry Jones and company have now dipped into the first round pool three of the last four years. Tyron Smith and Travis Frederick have a new linemate, and the pedigree of the unit has just skyrocketed.

Martin will presumably line up at right guard, where he projects best, with the ability to also play right tackle in the league. This is do to his lone difficulty being able to handle wide rushes and control his waist bend to handle edge rushes. These weaknesses are basically eliminated when putting him inside at guard.

What Martin Brings To The Table

Martin has started an outstanding 52 games in his career; 50 of them as a left tackle. He is one of the most polished linemen that you will find and has a great ability to advance to the second level and latch onto defenders; a must with a zone scheme. His hand usage is superb, as he uses it to stun defenders and knock them off of the play. His intelligence is obvious when watching his play; he seems to always be one step ahead of the defender(s) in front of him. Combining him with Travis Frederick on the interior of the line will go a long way to removing the memory of the Cowboys getting fooled by stunting linemen. That must make Tony Romo happy.

Martin's profile began to rise in public knowledge during this year's Senior Bowl; where all of his skills came to be displayed. Here's what CBS Sports' Rob Rang had to say about him then.

On the offensive side of the ball, Martin locked down the blindside for most of the day, showing his trademark patience, forceful hands and underrated athleticism. While he generally played well, Martin's lack of ideal size was exposed a bit by some of the longer defensive ends he faced during Tuesday's practice, most notably West Virginia's Will Clarke, a 6-foot-6, 271-pounder with nearly 34" arms.

While Notre Dame's standout handled speed rushers, Clarke used his long arms to keep Martin's hands from grabbing hold of him. Unable to latch on, Martin was beaten to the outside, on occasion, reinforcing the theory that while he could remain at tackle in the NFL, he projects as a potential Pro Bowl guard.
He wasn't the only one singing his praises. NFL Network's Mike Mayock took things a step further, saying ever higher commendations were in Martin's future at guard.

"He never missteps, he's always under control," Mayock said, pointing out that Martin is a solid technician and also has enough quickness to push speed pass rushers past the quarterback.

Some analysts think Martin might be best-suited to play guard because of his size (6-foot-4, 305 pounds). Pugh was a tackle at Syracuse and was moved inside by theGiants. Mayock said he thinks Martin can play left tackle, but "worst-case scenario, you move him inside and he's an All-Pro guard."

When our own Joey Ickes' looked at Martin, here's what he had to say.

Martin is also a very good run blocker, he has the ability to make the cut-off or reach block, getting his hands on a man a full gap away from him, and swing his hips around to get his butt in position to set the crease for the back. He is also agile enough to get to the second level and mirror a LB, and remove them from the play when called upon as well.

His best trait as a run blocker to me is his instincts as part of a GOT or TAG (Guard/Tackle) combination block in the zone run game. He has a great sense of how long to stick with the man at the first level, and does very good job of timing his release and finding his man at the second level to clear the lane for the running back to scamper through...

Zack Martin has a graduate level understanding of offensive line play, and plays with extremely refined technique.

What Does This Tell Us About Dallas

That they stayed true to their tendencies. Earlier in the week, we harped on several draft tendencies that Dallas has shown that give us great insight into what they would do this weekend.

The first? Dallas is obsessed with getting in-depth knowledge of a prospect and relies on drafting players that they've brought in for a pre-draft visit. Eight of their last nine first picks (including third rounder Jason Williams in 2009) have been in for one of those visits.

Then, the fact that Dallas loves to walk out of the first round being able to say "We got the best [insert position here], and this clearly is at play here with Martin. The Cowboys project Martin to guard first and foremost and the tradition that started with Dez Bryant, and continued through Tyron Smith, Mo Claiborne and Travis Frederick continues.

And of course, Martin is an RKG. He's been team captain the last two years in South Bend and has won their offensive lineman of the year award all four seasons of his collegiate career.

I'm going with a B+. I said a few days ago, Martin would be the only non- Defensive guy I'd look at. Didn't think he'd make it to us. Not sure we could have made a better pick. Maybe picking up more picks, but that didn't look too promising based on the picks people got to trade out of the 1st.

Talked to his father a few days ago now I wonder if I will lose a coworker both he and his brother are very good football players that have top notch work ethic

The media loves sucking off the cowboys huh its getting kinda old dont ya think
This is coming from a Lakers fans? Cmon now.

Love em or hatem, the Cowboys, Lakers, and Yankees get the highest interest in their respective sports.

Just look at week 1 of the NFL. Everyone just assumed the Seahawks would play the 49ers in their 1st game. But FOX knows a 49ers-Cowboys game would get a bigger draw.

This is a good pick for a team that needed line help. They didn't get caught up in the hype. The line will be damn good.

Grade: Good pick, good fit
Dallas Cowboys: Zack Martin (16th)
The skinny: Jerry, how could you! The Cowboys passed on Johnny Manziel, but they did address a much more pressing need in beefing up the offensive line with one of the most versatile linemen in the draft. Tony Romo, bad back and all, is pretty happy after Thursday night.

Is Martin as a guard worthy of a mid-first round pick? That’s debatable. But over and over on tape, Martin shows that he’s a true ***-kicker, with a fiery mentality and tremendous upper-body strength. He’ll have to get comfortable with a few new things, but he wouldn’t be the first college tackle to kick inside – and he may wind up as one of the best.

How This Pick Goes Right:
I'm not going to say the quarterback's name...
Zack Martin was the football-person pick here, and while I'm rarely "nice" to decisions made with Jerry Jones' stamp-of-approval on them, this looks like a great one.
Protection has been a huge problem for the Cowboys for a long time. This pick (and that of Travis Frederick last year) should help that.

How This Pick Could Go Terribly Wrong:
To me, Zack Martin is a guard.
I know he has played tackle and that he can play tackle, but he's a natural guard who can be very good there. The only slight concern is that the Cowboys have spent high picks on interior linemen in two straight drafts—hardly conventional. But, honestly, if you're getting great players, who cares?

The assumed pick here was Johnny Manziel, but Martin is a much smarter and safer choice. He’s versatile and will give the Cowboys a boost at either right tackle or inside at guard. He’s smooth in pass and run blocking and will be a building block across from Tyron Smith.

Glad Jerry selected a player based on needs of the team rather than needs of fame.

Hopefully this not only help Romo with time but Murray to bulldoze inside the gaps.

2014 Cowboys To do list: Offense run the rock.

Put him on the left side and go Frederick, Martin and Smith... Sick.

so where do we go at 47 and our 3rd rounder?

tonight will make the fate of this draft IMO

they'll probably draft a TE or something stupid, Lee was the last 2nd round pick they actually got right and that was 2010

I would want a DL WR or S at 47

In the second: Demarcus Lawrence, Ego Ferguson, Jernigan, Tuitt, Hageman, Ealy... Wouldn't be upset with Sua-Filo if he slid.

In the third: Like the guard from Baylor, Crichton, Kareem Martin, Dion Bailey, Christian Jones, Kyle Van Noy (probably gone?), Ed Reynolds and the corner from Nebraska.

I just don't see the need for a receiver early. Dez and Terrance start. Dwayne or Beasley in the slot. That's fine. I'd rather draft a RB like Sankey or Mason than a receiver.
