THE OFFICIAL 2024 - 2025 DALLAS COWBOYS SEASON THREAD || 4-7 Next Game 11/28 vs. Giants Vol. Thanksgiving

Bucky Brooks, a former NFL defensive back and current analyst for NFL.com, joined Elf and Slater on KRLD-FM The Fan this week to discuss the Cowboys' draft. Here are some highlights:

On if Travis Frederick is better than Alabama center Barrett Jones:

I think Travis is a much better player than Barrett Jones. For all the accolades that Barrett Jones gets, I think it’s a little bit different story that scouts would give you when you look at his game and his potential and how his game projects to the next level. Travis Frederick is a solid, hard hat, lunch pail guy. He’s going to give you all the athleticism and versatility that you want to see from your interior people. He’s got football instincts, savvy and the ability to really just get it done against bigger people. And when you think about the fact that Wisconsin has been so successful producing guys in the pros, particularly on any level of the offensive line, I think this is a great pick. I think it shores up a big area for Dallas.

On if Frederick would’ve made it to No. 47:

It’s hard to know. The thing is what you can’t underestimate [is] it only takes one team to like him. If the Cowboys got a sense that there was another team or a series of teams that liked Travis Frederick, he was not going to be there. Typically when you think about guards and centers, they go not necessarily at the bottom of the first round, they go at the top of the second round. So with them picking 31st, they obviously felt like he was not going to be there at 47 and that’s why they pulled the trigger. And I credit them because when you fall in love with a player, if there’s a guy that you love and you know he’s your guy, there’s no need to get cute trying to get him at the right value. They got him, he’s a starter for their team, he upgrades the offensive line. I think they’re certainly happy with the pick.

^^Frederick is a day one starter..interesting to see how well bw and jj adjust....alot of money to be saved next season by cutting scandrick if bw can show something this season...

and safety is still up in the air imo...i dont trust jj wilcox or matt johnson to be my free safety...

heard eric winston (chiefs) nd tyson clabo (falcons) as potential replacements to doug free...id take either considering theyll be an instant upgrade from free, at half the price...add a guard and our o line shaped up nicely

Y'all seem to forget Jerry Jones OWNS the team. He can make any decision at anytime.
There are times I feel like he is ruining this franchise, and lately he has seemed to recognize his faults.
Yeah there has been some bad moves over the years, but a couple of good moves and we're right back in Super Bowl contention.
It's not the GMs job to win the Super Bowl. That responsibility belongs to the head coach and his staff.
If it's anyone we should be blaming for playing piss poor football its Jason Garrett.
Bold: What evidence is there of that?

Red: That's the most asinine thing I've ever heard. Do you think Ozzie Newsome, Ted Thompson or Jerry Reese believe it's not their responsibility to win a Super Bowl?

Learned from mistakes is an easy one: Passed on Randy Moss, drafted Dez Bryant
Jerry the GM won 3 Super Bowls in four years. Not sure whats so bad about that.
Oh let me guess, "Jimmy Johnson built that team!" or "that was 20yrs ago, those Super Bowls are irrelevant."
Like I said, a couple of good moves and were right back in this thing. And I saw some good moves in this draft.
Better yet, if Garrett can call a damn game we will win the division running away. And you can take that to the bank.

Al Davis had accomplished as much as Jerry.

Some of y'all believe Jimmy Johnson wasn't the mind behind those 90's Cowboys?? :lol

It's not like that was some sort of difficult or super intelligent decision to make.

Jimmy & His coaching staff were the brains behind everything. He was the reason they got faster. He was the reason the defense changed like it did (though if he had his way y'all woulda never drafted Emmitt Smith)

Jerry Jones used to tell Jimmy to relay to reporters that Jerry was involved in decision making and he asked Jimmy to talk to him in the war room when on camera to make it look like Jerry was giving great insight into the picks.

Tim Cowlishaw had a great interview about this.

If any if you care to listen. I'd recommend if as Tim was pretty close w/ Jimmy during the triplets days

I thought this all was common knowledge to Cowboys fans.

Some of ya'll young fellas wasn't around when Jerry fired Jimmy right after they won the 2nd of back to back Super Bowls because Jerry felt he wasn't getting the credit. Do ya'll realize how ridiculous that was at the time, to fire the guy after 2 Super Bowls, it was unheard of.

:lol My man... The Super Bowls matter. But for the 20 years since, Jerry has repeatedly undermined his coaches, made terrible personnel decisions, and done nothing to get this team closer to the Super Bowl.

If you're *****ing about Garrett, you're *****ing about Jerry... Jerry hires dudes like Jason Garrett because he knows they command no power in making decisions. He's hired one guy since Jimmy that carried any weight, and he ran Tuna off right as this team was reaching a point of actually being really close. Since then? Wade Phillips and Jason Garrett nose dives.

EVERYTHING that is wrong with this franchise traces right back to the guy making decisions.

Bro stop watching Dale Hansen unplugged.
Jerry hires people because he feels they can get the job done, and there isn't an employer in this world that hasn't made a bad hiring decision before.
And if Jimmy Johnson was this championship machine, then I must have been in a coma when he took the Dolphins to back to back championships?
Like I said, they were a great TEAM, and both struggled without each other.
Jimmy wanted out of the league anyway. Which is evident by his departure from Miami after a few years.

Bad Blood
The feud between Jimmy Johnson and Jerry Jones finally boiled over, making a divorce inevitable
Peter King

America's team, meet America's Question. Last week Barry Switzer, of all people, asked it on behalf of infuriated Dallas Cowboy fans confounded by the March 29 resignation of coach Jimmy Johnson. "One thing," Switzer said to team owner Jerry Jones several days before Jones offered Switzer the job. "Would you or Jimmy please explain to me how two guys could be on top of the world and win two straight Super Bowls and not be able to get along with each other?"

This dude  S J King gotta be Jerry Jones kin or something.

Jerry Jones is main person responsible for the Cowboys mediocrity over the last decade or so.

He got so upset because Jimmy Johnson got the credit for the Cowboys success in the 90s (and deservedly so) he decided to take a more hands on approach to the team so that any subsequent success would be given to him.

How has that worked out thus far?

You said it's the head coaches job to win the Super Bowl and not the GM. However it is the GM's job to hire a head coach capable of winning a Super Bowl, not yes men that acquiesce to his every whim; that he can undermine and meddle with like the Jason Garretts and Dave Campos of the world.

Jerry needs to check his ego. He's the only owner that conducts post-game interviews after every game; that irks me beyond belief.

Jerry even said himself that if any other GM had the track record he had, they would be fired with the quickness.

But that's not happening in Dallas, and that's the problem.

Jerry needs to realize that being the owner and GM of a team doesn't mean that he has to be the face of it, and until he does that the Cowboys will continue to swim in the waters of mediocrity.

Here's what I'm tired of. Everybody acting like we haven't won our division recently.
Everybody acting like we haven't had winning seasons recently.
How many of yall have actually went back and looked at our team record each year since 1999?
Let me answer that for you, NONE.

As a fan WAAAAAAYYYYYYY before Jerry bought the team, I understand its fun to bash the Cowboys.
We have the same ups and downs as any other pro franchise, yet its made out to be so much worse when its the Cowboys.
I have decided to look at the reality of my favorite team, and the reality is we are a great franchise.
The reality is, when we won 3 championships in 4 years everybody was nut riding the star.
Now we hit some turbulent times, everybody wants to kick us while were down.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but history does repeat itself.
And if that is the case we are due to be back on top, and I believe that time is now.
I'm riding with the STAR!

I admire your optimism S J King, I really do but I just don't see how this current iteration of the Cowboys is posed to make a return back to prominence.

Haven't won double digits game in a season for a few years nor the division. Have had minimal playoff success in recent years so I don't expect this team to make a run at the Super Bowl next season.

I hope your right though. I would love for the Cowboys to win another Super Bowl. If that happens I'll be the first person to give you props for your foresight.

As for me I'm tempering my expectations for this team, because they've burned me before.

Jerry Jones gave Romo money like he was Brady, Manning or Brees. If that doesn't tell you how ****** up his mind is, then I don't know what to tell you.
