how did the refs essentially admit that they made the wrong foul call but say the challenge was unsuccessful?

A weird loophole but it worked, Mavs knew they would lose it. They challenged the foul on Dennis which was going to fail but they have to review the play in totality which then they pick up the foul on Russ.

Worked out for the Mavs but they had to lose a T.O. over the refs screwing up ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
