Should the NBA tie awards to games played?
The NBA has a massive problem when it comes to load/injury management. We’ve seen fans, coaches, the commissioner, executives, broadcast companies and people who don’t even like the NBA complain about it. It’s hardly a secret.
And just look at last night! The Celtics essentially gave Tatum an All-Star break before the actual All-Star break by deciding not to play him in a nationally televised showdown with the Bucks, arguably the best game of the year so far … at least on paper. The NBA has been trying to figure out how to curb this behavior by teams and players.
So, what about tying postseason awards to games played? What if players were ineligible for MVP if they miss a certain number of games?
“The possibility of tethering awards to appearances would not only have an impact on who gets recognized by the league, with its most prestigious honors serving as an incentive structure, but it would also be an attempt by the NBA to solve one of its most nettlesome issues — load management.”
That’s a potentially massive bargaining chip for the players, as we start figuring out what the cut of the historic revenue pie will be in the next CBA. The players union can dangle the idea of the MVP and other awards giving teams and players incentives to play in these games.
Sometimes, it’s not even the players’ fault, though. Teams sometimes just decide a given game is a rest night.
Voting already negates the issue a bit. Certain media members won’t consider a player for an award if he’s missed too much time. Draymond Green has probably lost an NBA Defensive Player of the Year award or two because of this. But to make it official? What would the workaround be? Minutes?

Most NFL games are trash on a weekly basis. Lucky to get 3-4 decent ones out of the 15 game slate. It’s certainly not like they are some superior product.
The thing NFL has going for it is the infrequency of games in comparison to the NBA, which makes every game mean more. Sundays basically become a weekly holiday for 5 months of the year.
That’s just something the NBA, and the NHL and MLB for that matter, can’t replicate. It’s apples to oranges.

The league needs more midrange specialists and a return to more physicality. Idk, allow some form or degree of hand checking.
With all this high scoring and 40+ pt games explosions, the narrative is getting tired and there’s no end in sight.
Foulbaiting characters like James Harden need to discouraged from that behavior. They also seem to have backed off the flopping rules.
Trying to level the playing field somehow for a more gritty physical battle experience.
And on a different note, the league could use some hothead, wild, possibly unstable characters. Rodman, World Peace, Spree etc type dudes.
