The Official Netflix Thread Tho: Recommend Streaming Movies

I don't see how Hulu, Amazon and other Pay per month subscriptions aren't hemorrhaging losses quarter after quarter.
Amazon video is a loss leader to help keep people on prime, which makes amzn a ton. AWS handles all the tech stuff so that gives them a cost advantage. They go after low budget and cost original movies and series too, so for as much as Netflix spent on Marco Polo they can get like 5 shows on.

Hulu has had a lot of losses since they started but began to make money a few years ago. They're owned by NBC, Fox and Disney so they got pockets as big as amzn and is growing a lot lately since they get the best broadcast content. Right now, they're at around 12 million subscribers. That's over $100mm a month plus ads. Hulu is US only, so no international growth expenses for that like Netflix has.

Netflix has about 80 million international and US subs and is only mildly profitable since they spend most of it on content and international expansion. They're committed to over $12 billion in content, of which 5 is due within the year. Last year Netflix made about $100 in profit, most of which is all the dvd mail business.

HBO made $500 million in profit last quarter to compare.

Netflix profits are coming though.
Soon it will be "gone are the days of Cable tv...."

If it isn't an app in the computer in the palm of your hand, it will be like a Newspaper, not needed.

IMO opinion anyway

Well yea

Sling TV and Time Warner have apps. I think most major cable companies have apps. It's the cost of cable. As well as the commercial breaks that kill the vibe of the movie/show, that is killing cable.

I hope we eventually get a service where we can just pick each channel that we want and not get stuck with packages with a bunch of channels we don't want. My dad complains all the time about his high cable bill but he's old and would never switch to something like sling tv or just get a digital antenna to go with a bunch of apps (netflix, amazon prime, hulu, hbo now).

Yep.

Cost is insane.

Cost is going up while Cable grows less and less convenient.

Right now Cable isn't even needed, you only need regular network channels.

With Roku for example, I can upload every app for every channel I watch on COX.

My sister is frugal so I bought her and her Husband a Roku a few years back and they use My COX acct# to upload AMC/HBO/ESPN/TNT etc.

They get what I pay $250 per month for, @ $0

The best thing cable has going for it is sports and kids networks. The moment Viacom offers a standalone service for Nick and Nick Jr. for a great price, it's over. Sling's price is decent so if they were to jump on that, paired w/ Disney, most parents will cut the cord since that's why many of us keep cable. I cut it about 2 months ago though and have no complaints from the youngsters.

the only reason i still pay for cable ($140 / mo) is for my dodger / laker games pretty much.

This Bloodline S2 tho.................

SHEESH.  I've got 2 eps left and I'll be damned if this isn't the most engaging **** I've watched in a looooong time.

The last episode of season 2 made me go right back and watch the first few of season 1.

Thats season 2 finale tho

Ala Carte has to eventually happen with ridiculous cable prices. I love Sling TV. Viceland, Travel, Amc. They just added ABC. They just need FX and I'm set. Don't even watch Cable like that but it's good to have something other than Netflix when company comes over.

Someone school me on sling? All I need is to be able to regularly watch NBA/NFL at my convenience, and Netflix.

Snowpiercer on Hulu is dope btw. I recommend it.

Man i excited for voltron show ill spend friday night watching all 11 episodes also i think orange drops next friday if im not mistaken

Then you'd wind up paying just as much or more than what cable costs now. If you want something comparable to a cable bundle to get live sports, popular cable networks and broadcast tv shows, you'd have to get a combination of sling, netflix, hulu, amazon prime. Throw in epix hbo now or showtime for movies and premium shows and you're paying 50-70 bucks a month, which is about the same as you're paying for a similar cable bundle. If you don't want so many channels it totally makes sense to cut the cord.

People hate on the cable bundle a lot because it does seem unfair to be paying for a lot of channels you don't care about, but if it wasn't for the bundle a lot of those channels can't exist or would cost a lot. Others feel the same way about your favorite channels.  It's basically a socialist thing that works pretty well. You get a bunch of customers together to pool their money together, everyone gets some channels they like and pay for some things they won't ever watch.

Planet money did a whole podcast on this if anyone cares

Nah, I think he pays close to a $100 for his cable bill. Amazon prime sucks so I wouldn't pay the $100 annual for that anyway. All he watches is sports, hbo channels , and discovery id channel along with the local news.

i see narcos is going to be broadcast on telemundo. wonder if nextflix starts doing this with original series and sell content to networks to get more subscriptions.
