Hey guys, thanks for all of your kind comments, it's much appreciated. I really do look forward to contributing to this thread, as well as critiquing some of your pictures. I have been lurking since Vol. 1 and actually one of my first posts was in Vol. 1 and I posted this really cliche' macro picture of a flower and another one of the grass and the sky. I got some decent feedback for it and decided hey, let me try to get more into this. It's taken my a while, but I have finally got some decent equipment and so I am more willing to go out and shoot as well as share. Take it from me though, DO NOT EVER think that you need an DSLR to take great pictures or to become a good photographer. Don't jump the gun and immediately get a camera...read up and learn the basics. Know the correlation between aperture, ISO, and shutter speed, know how your camera works..etc. etc. Trust me, once you do get started, it makes photography much more fun because you actually know what you are doing.// end rant/lecture.
Anyways, the "Our People. Our Community"picture is actually a picture out of my set for a final project in a photo class. My theme for the portfolio is based upon images of those that are living on the street/are homeless. I got the idea from a man who did what was called the "Two Dollar project" He would walk around with his camera and for any homeless individual on the street, he would give 2 dollars to in return for a picture. I did the same thing, but it was honestly much harder than I expected. I found myself pacing back and forth trying to muster up the courage to take the shot...you honestly feel really bad taking these pictures.
It was this quote that made me shy away from it more than anything: "Sometimes it's hard not to think of photography as an act of aggression. You're stopping people from the flow of their lives, you're cropping them from the space in which they live and have their meaning, you're juxtaposing them to something they didn't know they were next to. You're objectifying them according to your terms, not theirs - for who would choose to be objectified? It's very complicated, but the fact is, most photographs reduce us. It's very easy to photograph a man and then later say, "This man represents the homeless." Too easy."
Anyways, sorry for the long rant in here...I'll start posting more pictures and talking a little less.
Oh yeah, alot of what I see in here isGreat job guys.
