PS4 UI and Social Features, Shuhei Yoshida on Ease of Use

PlayStation.Blog: Obviously not many people have used the PS4 UI yet, so can you tell us a little bit about how it feels?
Shuhei Yoshida: What I showed was only a small portion of the UI. Obviously the system software is still in development. We really wanted to show off the social aspect of the UI. The minute you boot up, you’ll see all the information about games you own, what your friends are doing, whether there’s any new DLC coming out, or if your friends have shared a video or screenshot. And you can also spectate anyone playing PS4.

The demonstration was to show that my friend Eric was playing Killzone. I was able to spectate, but also join the game. All PS4 games allow you to take screenshots, so I pressed the share button to automatically take one. And PS4 also records the last 15 minutes of gameplay, so I had the choice of either uploading the screenshot or the video. So I tweeted out the screenshot to my actual Twitter account. And if I chose to, I could have posted the video to my Facebook. It’s very easy to do.
“It’s very easy to do.”

PSB: We’ve increased the friend list limit to 2,000 with PS4. As someone who really enjoys social media, are you looking forward to that huge influx of new friend requests that will surely come on launch day?
Yoshida: I have maxed out all the friends lists of all the consoles I have! The thing about friends lists though, is that you might meet a person in a game and make friends with them, but then after a couple of months you might forget who they are. So I’m really excited to be able to add the real names of friends, like on Facebook, so you can see who that person is and bring your own friend network onto your console.
Of course, it’s optional, so you don’t have to do it if you don’t like it, but I’m the kind of person who enjoys a game much more if I know who I’m playing with. So I’m really looking forward to this!

PSB: What aspect of PS4 are you most excited for gamers to discover when they purchase their new system?
Yoshida: The discoverability of things. It’s like checking your social media every day. I really like that people can find out about new games, information, and what their friends are doing, without even booting the game. For example, you can check out whether you have had new challenges from friends from the home screen of every game. All the important information is presented to you immediately. The same game might come out on PS3 and PS4, but playing the game on PS4 will be much more fun, I would expect.
“The indie movement is so exciting to me.”

PSB: You’ve been with PlayStation for many years and witnessed all our major platform launches. With a few months left until the release date, how are you feeling about the PS4 launch, compared with previous platforms’ launch dates?
Yoshida: The indie movement is so exciting to me. It really reminds me of when we were working on the original PlayStation. Back then, PlayStation really expanded the audience for gaming and brought in a lot of new developers. Lots of unique, interesting games came out of nowhere.
I feel a similar kind of vibe and passion from those indie people today. I’m so excited this time. It was scary going into PS3, actually. Everything was going bigger, but this time around it’s a really great combination of big and better games, and smaller, really creative, interesting titles.

PSB: Are there any indie titles in particular you’re really looking forward to playing on PS4?
Yoshida: I’m always a huge fan of Octodad. I was watching the live demo before the press conference and was like “Let me play!” And The Witness. It wasn’t in the show, but I can’t wait to play the game when it comes out.

PSB: While we’re on the topic of games, I know everyone is always interested to find out what you’re playing at present. Can you offer our readers three recommendations that you think they should check out?
Yoshida: Along with our huge catalogue from Worldwide Studios, Dragon’s Crown is a game I’m playing and really digging. It’s a very immersive, action brawler RPG with beautiful graphics. I’m playing on PS Vita, and it’s very beautiful on the PS Vita screen. I highly recommend it.
I still haven’t been able to make huge progress on Hotline Miami. It’s very hard! But it’s so addictive! I really like it. It’s like playing Demon’s Souls or Dark Souls — you have to die a lot to learn how to play.
The other recommendation… maybe Velocity Ultra? That’s so great. Or PixelJunk Monsters Ultimate, perhaps. These are all games on PS Vita, but Dragon’s Crown and Hotline Miami you can also play on PS3.

I don't know if any of you guys have been following this game. It's got the old Mega Man team working on it
They took matters into their own hands since Capcom doesn't want to do anything with Megaman and it's already raised 1 MIllion in two days for the Kickstarter which you can vew here.

At this rate, Vita and PS4 should be a lock.

Kickstarter? :|

Inafune could find a publisher easily.

And would probably have to compromise his vision just as easily. Kickstarter works well in this instance, but I'd have to see what so "innovative", because it's really looking like a Megaman-wannabe in a different setting.

Well it seems people want a megaman wanabe, donations are past 1m and going.

I got a 25 inch hdtv in my room for my ps3, would like that for ps4 if it doesnt compromise the graphics

Do you play right in front of the tv like a pc?

I have a 42" plasma but i wana get a smaller one to connet to my pc/ps4.

Can you connect a ps4 to a moniter?

I have a Panasonic 55" plasma TV which is about 8 months old and I also have a 3 year old 1080p 40" Sony Bravia LCD TV.

Easily without a doubt plasma TV's are better for gaming compared to LCD's.

When I play MLB 13 The Show on my plasma tv there is no lag or motion blur compared to my Sony LCD tv,

Image burn in or image retenion is no longer a a issue with the new plasma tv's nowadays.

yeah you can with an hdmi cable, I do play it like a PC. Also makes shooters easier, a 50in tv with a small shooting target is harder

Sony Will Show “More than Ten” PS4 Titles at Tokyo Game Show

Sony Computer Entertainment Japan and Asia announced today with a press release that during Tokyo Game Show it will have “more than ten” PS4 games available to visitors at its booth.

The titles publicly announced so far are Knack, Deep Down, Driveclub, Killzone: Shadow Fall,Wolfenstein: The New Order, PlayRoom and Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag, meaning that there should be at least four titles that haven’t been announced yet.

Including PS3, PS Vita and PS Mobile the publisher will show over fifty titles.

The PS Vita area will include Musou Orochi 2 Ultimate, God Eater 2, The Legend of Heroes: Sen no Kiseki and Tearaway, while the PS3 area will have, between others, Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, Gran Turismo 6, Ace Combat Infinity, Beyond: Two Souls and Pro Evolution Soccer 2014.

The PlayStation booth will also have a massive LED screen installed to broadcast events and gameplay, and developers will be in attendance.

We also already knew that SCEJA will host a keynote on the first day of the trade show, titled “The Creative World of PlayStation 4”.

A dedicated website (in Japanese) has been opened, and we can probably expect it to be updated with other titles between here and the opening of the event on September the 19th.

I won't get too hyped just yet as they could be indie/ mobile titles so keep your hype in check.
Yakuza Ishin should be one of them though and Demon Souls 2 has been heavily rumored but I doubt they will show it now.
Still, they have two conferences this month so I hope they show at least something big.

Sony to reveal PS4 Virtual Reality headset at TGS

Custom-built Sony headset in the pipeline; Drive Club team already working with tech.

Sony is preparing to reveal the final piece of its PS4 hardware strategy at TGS by showcasing a PlayStation-branded virtual reality head-mounted display, CVG has learned.

It originally intended to reveal the Sony headset at Gamescom but plans fell through at the eleventh hour. The company is currently weighing up whether the PS4 device should be pitched as a key differentiator for the console or a non-essential add-on.

The matter has been slightly complicated, but not derailed, by the growing industry support for Oculus Rift. Sony's device will be a categorical rival to Oculus, and for months there have been rumours suggesting the two companies are seeking a partnership.

Sony set to go big with virtual reality on PlayStation 4

Sony plans to enter the virtual reality gaming space in a big way with PlayStation 4, Eurogamer can reveal.

Amid the growing popularity of the Oculus Rift VR headset among the development community and a small number of gamers, Sony has been working on a rival device for its next-gen console, and it is on track to be revealed in 2014.

Multiple sources have indicated to Eurogamer that Sony's VR headset will work similarly to Oculus'. Internally, the device has been demonstrated with Evolution Studios' PS4 racer DriveClub, with players able to look around the cockpit of a car.

Evolution's involvement comes as no surprise - the Liverpool studio is home to the Worldwide Studios Stereoscopic 3D team, which has worked on 3D game development since 2008. The team, and 3D chief Mick Hocking, have been relatively quiet since PlayStation's ill-fated 3D push in 2011.

Sony also has form with headmounted displays. The £1000 HMZ-T2 is a personal 3D viewer that can be used with 3D games and HD movies. It includes an OLED 720p panel for each eye that renders 3D pictures in high-contrast detail. Eurogamer reviewed its predecessor, the HMZ-T1, in late 2011. The Oculus Rift performs much better than the HMZ-T2 for games, and Sony hopes to one-up the rival device with its own offering.

Eurogamer understands Sony's VR headset was set to appear in some form at German show Gamescom last week, but was pulled. We now expect it to be unveiled next year.

This is Huge!

The Oculus Rift has been a big hit so Sony working on their own will be huge with their resources.

CVG says it will be revealed at TGS.

They've also just announced their HMZ-T3 which is much improved compared to it's 2 predecessors. It has a wireless option instead of been tethered by HDMI.
This headset is geared towards movies more than games but it shows they do have some experience in that area.
