It's all a game within a game to help better make a game.
Without getting disgustingly specific I and others (you'll especially see this in marketing) use what we call "Personas" which is basically a fictional character that we assign traits to for a specific market subset. These personas represent the user/customer base and we use them to tailor our work since we're developing with a player centered approach.
When doing the data mining for these personas we've found it very helpful to assign quotes from posts or interviews to various personas. So we might take a quote from
Bad Religion
and attribute it to "Jacque" our White, Male, Canadian, Hockey loving, RPG centric gamer. These persona's are treated as a living entity that evolve with player feedback and market change.
When I talk about NT being a different and good place to get discussions and opinions from it's because as I said people aren't here for video game news directly. You might prefer to discuss your gaming and news here but NT is a site about sneakers and that's what originally brought you here. So the community here can give you a bigger picture of your player base than somewhere like Kotaku or a publisher/game specific message board where you can only assume that people are basement dwelling weaboos and take their opinions as such. While I feel NT in general is overly generalized in categorization at the top level (For example, years ago I actually heard during a meeting "We need to get this Niketalk market share do what you need to do to get these ads running to the urban population") I think that there is a wealth of great, diverse, and viable opinions that come out of this community.
Here you can drill down deep and get into a whole bunch of cross post referencing to see what the player-base is involved in. That's all for the community and information research people to do. Take
D Double
who is a categorized (I'm not saying this is 100% fact) as a Sony loyalist, who is in the European market (British?), is a minority, technology versed, interested in fitness (running), interested in F1 racing, an avid soccer fan, and doesn't give a **** about Zelda.
Having that kind of data to add into your persona's or to get very specific when talking to investors is a great thing to have.
