He's 54. Not sure on the exact amount as our contact is restricted to 1 or 2 monthly phone calls and a visit here and there. He always shifts the subject if I try to ask about the drinking or he gets angry. I presume he drinks all day every day as I don't recall seeing/hearing him sober in the last 5 years at least. And he was a pretty heavy drinker before my mom and I separated. Mostly hard liquor to my knowledge.

Problem is I don't really have anything positive to say about him. When the time comes I will try to comfort him with the few good memories I have, maybe polish them a bit. Assuming I know when that last time will be. Only reason he's in the hospital now is because my aunt found him and practically dragged him to the ER.
We've been trying to get him to stop drinking for many years but he refuses to listen to anyone, even me. A while back my aunt tried bringing our general physician with her to force him to see a doctor but dad refused to open the door.

As horrible and unforgivable that is, you never know how you're gonna feel at that moment. I've always hated mine and honestly wasn't expecting to care much. With all his drinking I knew it was only a matter of time.
I don't feel particularly sad but it did have some emotional impact. While I can't forgive him for his actions, I think the least I can do as a son is try to comfort him towards the end, especially given his mental health now.
