Didn't they just... take it?
Yeah Twitter robbed him
I guarantee the original owner could've very easily sold it to a wealthy arab. They go crazy for rare usernames in countries like Saudi Arabia, Dubai, Qatar, UAE, ...
I did business before with a very wealthy Saudi who bought two 1 letter IG usernames for himself and his brother, and he explained their infatuation with 1 letter usernames like this:
'Over here at this level of wealth, everyone has supercars, mansions and tigers. A username like this is much more exclusive'
They see it as the holy grail of stunting on social media.

Technically, selling a username is against any social media platform's TOS but there's a very lucrative market for it.
When dealing with actual individuals or businesses who hold trademarks though, they could just contact the social media company and argue that they should be given the username because someone is trying to sell it to them.
I worked out a deal with rapper Big Krit's manager to get Krit his artist name on IG but he ended up scamming me and never responded back after I gave him the account info. I took back the account, sold it to someone else but somewhere down the line Krit's management got it back.
Likewise, the bank Goldman Sachs also got their IG username from me but they just straight up got me banned within hours after contacting their marketing department with the offer.
The IG was banned literally within 3-4 hours, then after a week it was magically unbanned and there was a Goldman Sachs company email attached to it.

The only company that's ever actually paid me is Koenigsegg, the car company, in exchange for their company name on IG.
Unless it's something really obscure that would be hard to sell to a regular person, I normally don't bother contacting companies and just sell straight to fans or people looking to monetize.

Eh, it was kinda part of the deal we made to keep TAN. We couldn't discuss things that already have dedicated threads. Ninja had a phrase....I can't remember what it was, tho.

So do (or did) folks looking to monetize off of social media handles create handles at just about any social site they hear of?

Fuuuuu I forgot Man U and Real Madrid are playing in Houston this evening. Traffic is about to be insane!!

Randomly thought about the Lucas spicy sweet powder candy that the Mexican ice cream trucks used to sell in Cali. I heard rumors that stuff had lead in it but didn’t stop a young me from copping. Ranch corn nuts were also my weakness and my teeth still hate me for it. Glad I got to spend some of my youth out there, Cali taught me skateboard culture.
