In the original script for the first Star Wars film in 1977, C3PO was supposed to be a human with incredibly high intellect named "Carl Poe", although his scenes were roughly the same, serving as R2D2's 'friend'. Anthony Daniels was still slated to play 'Carl Poe', however in the first week of shooting, Daniels reportedly kept pranking Director and Writer George Lucas. The pranks ranged from pulling his chair from underneath him, all the way to setting Lucas' hair on fire. In response, Lucas angrily re-wrote the Carl Poe character into a droid named 'C3PO' which required Daniels to wear the incredibly uncomfortable, hot, and rigid costume. Lucas designed the costume to be uncomfortable intentionally as a way to punish Daniels for his constant pranks. This is why C3PO cannot move his arms, and why his range of motion is so poor. Daniels did not let up however. The costume designer informed him of Lucas' malicious intent. From that day forward Daniels came to set very early before every shoot, and made Lucas coffee as seemingly a way of apologizing, however, it is rumoured that Daniels in fact urinated in the coffee every single morning. Lucas and Daniels hate each other to this day.
