I tend not to look at Hollywood as proper predictions of the future.

Back in the 50s, they expected us all to live in colonies on the moon by now and have flying cars.

the Mayan calender just says that our solar system has gone half way around the galaxy
and when 2012 comes its just the start of another time cycle
but i think they were off by a lil bit and that actually happened in 1997 (i think, not sure )
regardless, with their technology they were pretty close
