Thinking about becoming a firefighter

Currently I'm a college student majoring in journalism, but lately I have been thinking about maybe becoming a firefighter. I lost a close friend to a house fire and always had it in the back of my mind to do something to help prevent future fires from happening.
I've been reading up on what it's like being a firefighter and what it takes. I was wondering if any of you guys are or have been firefighters and wanted to share anything.
