One of my resolutions for 2016 is to become a better public speaker.

I found out about this organization called, Toastmasters, and they seem to do a really good job of helping people.

Has anyone done their sessions before? Gone to a meeting?

What should I expect?

A former coworker of mine was a member a few years ago. He tried to get me to go because I'm deathly afraid of public speaking. I didn't go, but he enjoyed it. He was a theater man and wasn't afraid of speaking in front of people. What he did say was that they helped him perfect his public speaking ability. Taught him about projecting his voice, his stance and other things. It is good for those who need to sharpen up their skills, and people like me you need that confidence.

so in his experience it definitely was a worth while program to join?

I've done Toastmasters back in 2010 and it's everything as advertised. Although, I will mention that the experience you have depends on the club you decide to be with.

I was apart of NY Toastmasters

Why did you join, if you don't mind me asking? Sharpen skills, or gain the tools to speak in public?

I was an analyst in investment banking and it was my second year. My mentor (who happened to be my managing director) strongly suggested I check it out. I had more time to myself that year and decided to give it a try.

I'm a member.  My dept SVP suggested me and another young coworker join. I did but she's too scared to join

.

It's really convenient though because my company has their own club, so we met at lunchtime. Our club has beginners all the way to advance speakers who compete regionally.

Highly suggest it for anybody.  You can always go as a guest to check it out. Looks good on the resume and graduate school apps too.

Gave my Icebreaker speech (your 1st full length speech) two weeks ago

We got a group at my job, went to maybe two sessions last year. ended up not continuing becuase i don't have any issues with speaking in front of people and ours didn't seem to have any "advanced" levels.

It def is a great program to be involved in if you want to get out there

There are a lot of toastmasters clubs through out NYC.

I saw two in BK that interested me. One was entrepeneur centered and one was a general club. I do want to be an entrepreneur. Do you think that would be a good step to take?

I've been meaning to join a local chapter as well. A teammate of mine does it and has really enjoyed it. Says he's learned quite a bit (in addition to becoming more comfortable 'on stage').

I actually spoke for 1.5 hours at our National Sales Meeting (~350 people) and did really well. For whatever reason, even after that, I still get anxious before big presentations. The worst!

I had to do a bunch of presentations for my business classes and developed some decent public speaking skills. I always did better when I gave no dambs. I thought being in an angry mood might help too but i'd probably just end up with an angry voice and start yelling.

Whenever I hear toastmasters I think about someone who's nice with the heat.

But I knew a couple people who were involved. Def helped em out
