I am planning to visit Chicago in Mid-September and am staying at the Sutton Place Hotel by the Magnificent Mile. I was wondering what is there to do in Chicago (does not have to be typical tourist things)? Is this a good central location for most things and is it easy to navigate Chicago through public transportation (I will not be renting a car)? Also, I am from Houston and on Sept. 8th, the Astros will be playing the Cubs at Wrigley Field, is it worth it to go see the game?

Last question, is this part of Chicago (downtown) safe for tourists? What areas should I avoid?

Thanks, if there is anything else you would like to add, it is more than welcome.

Edit: Any particular places I should visit?
Eating/Restaurant?
Sight Seeing?
Fun?
Parks?
Bars?
Nightlife?
Tours?
Open for anything really.

I try not to head south of 65th street.

Eating/Restaurant?
I've been in Evanston the last 3 years so I'm slightly biased but I think the North Shore is where the food is at. Definitely get yourself some deep-dish pizza and a Chicago style hot-dog.
Sight Seeing?
Lots of great architecture; there is a nice Chicago river architecture tour. Catch a game at Wrigley if you can (you'll get tix easily since we will be eliminated by then

)
Fun?

Parks?
Millennium park is a must; Grant Park is pretty nice.
Bars?
There are so many I don't know where to start. Wrigleyville is always a great time.
Nightlife?
Ditto.
Tours?
-idk much about this; probably your usual bus/sightseeing shenanigans
Open for anything really.

There are a tons of informative places too. Field, Adler, Shedd.
As to the other poster, there a bunch of sneaker places around.
This is a very brief skim. I have been here all my life so a bunch of stuff I just take for granted.

Also, you will get better and more precise answers in the Midwest subforum.

Pequods or Giordanos. Bring an empty stomach.

Also if you like Korean food, there are a LOT of good places there.

I've been out a bunch of times at this tequila bar - Salud Lounge (http://www.saludlounge.com/). Pretty good in terms of women and drinks.

Chicago is great. Have a nice trip!

You are staying in a great location for someone that is not familiar with the city.  There will be plenty of ways for you to get around.  The buses and train is very close, plus you can grab cabs anywhere around there.

There is a restaurant just north of where you are staying called the Big Bowl.  It has great food, check it out.

As for the Cubs game, I would say go.  Both teams are terrible but the weather in September can be great and there would be no better way to spend a nice fall day than at Wrigley.  Tickets will be cheap and if you like baseball you should not miss the experience.  After the game there are about 100 bars to go to right there.

People watching around where you are staying is amazing.  You will see every nice car in the city across the street.  The area where you are staying is called the 'Viagra Triangle' because that is where all the dudes with money go to find young women.  The best spots over there are Tavern on Rush, Carmines, and Gibsons.  They are all restaurants with bars.

If you want to go to any clubs/bars there are plenty within a 5 minute cab ride.  If you go to a street called Hubbard they are one after the other over there.

As for safety, you will be fine.  Unless you are a distance walker there is no where you can walk to that you would get yourself in trouble.  Cabrini Green is not what it used to be.

The Art Institute and Shedd Aquarium are the best in my opinion if you want to do touristy stuff.  Also, the architectural river tours are awesome and a cool way to see the city from a different perspective.

I am not sure if there are still and street fests then, but if there are you should check one of them out.  They are a great time and a cheap way to do something outside.
