Visiting New York in July: Suggestions?

Hey I'm gonna be in New York for the first time ever in July.

It's gonna be a short visit but I want to make it memorable and fun. Along with all the typical tourist attractions, I want to hit up the hot spots whereall the locals go to, (ie, restaurants, vegan/vegetarian restaurants, bars, entertainment, whatever)

I'd appreciate any help/suggestions, thanks!

sorry to steal your post, but i'm also heading down to new york and i'm trying to find some great clothing stores and I have heard of soho but Idon't really know what stores are there
oh and i'll be around the manhattan area
