The latest Qualcomm Snapdragon chips are finally coming, as the company announced that its Snapdragon MSM8655 system-on-a-chip and the new MDM9600
LTE modem are finding their way to phones on Verizon's network.
We first heard about a
1.2GHz Snapdragon late last summer, supposedly in line for an early 2011 release. Right on schedule, Qualcomm says that Verizon will be showing off the first smartphones with the MSM8655 under the hood this week at the CES. While
dual-core processors are making headlines right now, we're not expecting any sort of major market shift over to those chips, leaving plenty of room for designs like Qualcomm's.
The MSM8655 runs at 1.2GHz, has a built-in
graphics processor, and is supposedly optimized for low-power operation.
As Verizon adds more LTE capacity to its network, its phones should benefit from Qualcomm's MDM9600 LTE package, falling back to
3G speeds when the connection's not available. While Qualcomm is committed to outfitting Verizon with its chips, there's always the chance we'll see them in phones running on
AT&T's LTE network, once it gets that off the ground.
Look for the pairing of the MDM9600 and MSM8655 popping up on plenty of 4G
Verizon phones this year.

AT&T has revealed its plans for growing its 4G network, with a new focus on
LTE deployment. The company wants LTE up-and-running this year, with continued expansion through 2013.
When it comes to next-gen wireless data, there are plenty of strongly-held opinions over what is and isn't "real" 4G, so it's comforting to see that AT&T is covering its bases with the deployment of both
HSPA+ and LTE systems. AT&T started
upgrading its HSPA network to HSPA+ last year, giving the company some breathing room while it works on LTE. By now,
AT&T claims that those upgrades reach nearly its entire 3G network. The only thing keeping back higher speeds, according to the company, is a lack of broadband wiring to its cell towers, but it claims to be working on fixing that.
While some LTE infrastructure is apparently already in place, today's announcements marks a redoubling of efforts to get the system set up this year. AT&T hasn't promised a set launch date for the network, but says it will be active sometime this summer. The company may already be thinking about LTE
phones, as we learned about a
4G iPhone in the works. Considering that one won't be available until 2012, it would make a prime candidate to take advantage of the new LTE network.

At today's AT&T Developer Summit we got "official" word of one of HTC's latest Android-powered phones: the Inspire
4G.
With the 4.3-inch screen,
AT&T finally has a phone to compete with similar devices from Sprint and Verizon, and we can't help but think the Inspire 4G looks very similar to the
Desire HD. Additionally, the phone will come with the latest version of of
HTC's Sense UI -- including fastboot.
Like other "4G" phones, the Inspire 4G isn't going to be supporting AT&T's upcoming LTE network, instead it will be HSPA+, similar to "4G" phones from
T-Mobile.
Make sure you
check out all the other Inspire 4G information we've covered in the past.

Motorola has just unveiled a powerhouse of a phone for
AT&T, the Motorola Atrix 4G, featuring a dual-core processor, quarter HD resolution (540 x 960), a full 1GB of RAM, and huge 1930mAh battery. The 10.9-millimeter-thin, Android 2.2 Froyo-powered Atrix will support a pair of unique accessories: a Celio Redfly-like laptop dock that gives it full Firefox browsing capabilities with Flash and HTML5, along with an HD dock for hooking up to a home entertainment system.
This thing sounds like a monster, and we'll be all over it the
first chance that we get. By the way, we're assuming that this is the long-rumored Motorola Olympus, but that's not 100% confirmed just yet.
