Was MJ an average athlete??

Of course Magic was a good defender. Dude could guard 1-5. How many players can say that.

I think he was a good defender

He led the league in Defensive Win Shares one year

I expect this from that ryan dude, but not you.

You know damn well defensive win shares is an incredibly flawed stat. It puts a huge emphasis on team defense, and doesnt really say much about one's individual defensive ability. The pace of the 80's was also incredible, and no one was really playing defense back then so this stat doesn't mean much of anything in this context.

Yeah DWS is flawed

So are a lot metrics but I've never really heard that Magic Johnson was a poor defender though or that's the 1980s style of defense was poor

I don't think pace automatically means bad defense

That's something the everything is new is great crowd has came up with

Pace doesn't absolutely mean defense was bad but you combine the eye test, with the pace of play back then, and how crazy the points per possession was, and the evidence for defense being non existent back then is pretty overwhelming.

Keep trying to rationalize it to yourself all u want about players back then against your heros of today. Crunch them numbers. Advance them stats. I'll trust my eyes over yours. But everybody has the right to an opinion and a i do respect the fact u defend it to the best of your ability.

When I watch games from back then I don't see defense being non existent at all
neither do I. Not at all. I see guys getting clobbered everytime they come into the lane, defenses getting beat by great passing. Bird and Magic were the first guys to come into the league and say "Yea I'm gonna pass, and I'm gonna do it and make u look like a jackass. Lol. Cant outrun the ball. No matter how fast you are.

Can you imagine this players today being able to handcheck? Lebron and tony allen would probably go down as the greatest defenders ever.

No hand checking is just plain stupid rule in my opinion. Made illegal in 1994. Nearly every season after the Pistons won their 2nd title seems like the rules steadily changed in favor of the offense In some little way here or another. Technical fouls were changed. 2001 defensive 3 second rule. All kinds of changes. Google "nba rule changes" and the rules change list by yearly is seemingly never ending from the early 90's on up to today.

Lebron would benefit from hand checking.

.
LMAO GLOVE GUARDING 250 POUND LBJ
Is he the only player u can bring up thats playing today lol LBJ would have gotten hammered in the lane back then amd not gotten all these soft *** fouls of today. There were actually real Centers and Power Forwards back then in the 80s and 90s. Not stretch 5s and 4s like today. And Pippen, MJ and Rodman could all guard Lebron, for that matter.

Who in that area could reallly check Lebron? Scottie and Dennis maybe. Separate topics

You said hand checking would benefit LeBron. What does that concept have to do with Dennis, Scottie or others guarding him?
