Do you mean the game sprites or the in game art for the character on the character select screen? If you mean the game sprites, they were immensely outdated. They had been using the same sprites for the Xmen and other Marvel character since Children of the Atom and Marvel Super heroes respectively and the the same sprites from Street Fighter Alpha, Darkstalkers for the Capcom characters. Some characters had sprites made for the game such as Hayato, Cable, Ruby Heart, Sonson, Jill and a few others. MvC3 started from the ground up with new character models. They updated the look of many returning character to match their game or comic look during that time since the Marvel characters designs in MvC 2 were inspired by Jim Lee's Xmen comics or their Fox Kids animated series (along with the same voice actors like Cathal Dodd for wolverine!) and Capcom designs came from their mid 90's game. Ryu resembles his Street Fighter 4 appearance in MVC3 and Wolverine had his Astonishing Xmen look but made homages to older designs like Sentinel keeping his exact same design from Children of the Atom and MvC 2.
...if you're talking about the in game art, NOTHING is touching Shinkiro's art for MVC3. He came from SNK and went over to Capcom as an artist. He did the hyper realistic art for SNK characters for King of Fighters, Metal Slug and Capcom vs SNK before SNK went bankrupt and was later revived as SNKplaymore. Capcom picked him up and put him to work on promotional art for Devil May Cry, Capcom fighting all stars and Tatsunoku vs Capcom but he his best art work HANDS DOWN is the work he did for MVC3/UMvC3.
Excited for the heavyweights to do a buddy film!!
