Walt Disney Studios crosses $5 billion at global box office again
The Walt Disney Studios has announced that as of yesterday, the company has officially passed the $5 billion mark at the annual global box office, marking their third year in a row and the first and only time a movie studio has reached this threshold three times.
Among the films that pushed the studio’s cumulative total so high is Marvel Studios‘ Thor: Ragnarok, which will surpass $800 million globally as of later today. Thor: Ragnarok is also the seventh film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to reach the $800 million mark, an achievement that all three of the studio’s releases managed this year. The film has already out gained the other two Thor films, leaving behind 2013’s Thor: The Dark World which brought in $644 million worldwide and 2011’s Thor with $449 million.
Disney is also responsible for four of the top nine highest grossing films of the year, including Beauty and the Beast with a worldwide total of $1.26 billion (and the #1 film of the year domestically), Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 with an $863.6 million total, Thor: Ragnarok with a $798.4 million total, and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales with a $794.8 million total.
Additional box office hits for the studio this year include Pixar releases Cars 3 with $383.5M globally and Coco with $178.9M globally, as well as Lucasfilm’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story of which $309.3 million of its $1.05 billion global gross occurred during 2017) and Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Moana of which $252 million of its $643.3 million global gross occurred during 2017.
These statistic are likely to fluctuate quite a bit as the year comes to a close with Walt Disney Studios’ final release of 2017, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, opening in theaters on December 15.
