My guess is that it has to do with Bucky. They're gonna set him up to be the next Captain America. The same way Lil Stevie Weeby showed heart in bootcamp that got him the soldier serum, Bucky is gonna show some kind of heroism / leadership to make him a candidate for the shield.

Zero issue with a movie's length, if it's good
As a kid I'd regularly sit through the original Star Wars trilogy back to back to back.. and back to the future
I got couple movies in my top 10 that are either at or pretty close to 3 hours (braveheart, gladiator, godfather 1 & 2 and Patton.. even fight club is 2.5 hours and goodfellas is almost 2.5)
