What to do in New York, New York and nearby?

I'll be traveling to NY with my girlfriend during the last week of April. I'm coming from NorCal (SF area) and have never been to NY. I was wondering if you guys have any suggestions: places to eat, attractions, etc.? We kinda on a budget so we can't lavishly spend our money away. Anything would be great, thanks!
