When / What was the downfall of the NBA ?

I think this has diminished the quality of basketball that the NBA presents
exactly.

of course lebron is unguardable.. when you can take 4 steps, who can stop you?

Allen Iverson, Stephon Maurbury and the rest of the shoot first point guards.

And 1 basketball - kids work on trick moves rather than fundamentals

Espn. I still remember the nite iverson crossed jordan and that was the lead story on sportscenter, not the game but the crossover.

Stern and his goons ex. game 7 la vs sacramento.

All this kobe, lebron talk and now these commercials.

I also realized when it was going downhill when you had to force a dresscode on millionaires.

bringing things like the soulja boy and jayz talk into the playoffs last year.

I can go on and on but really the game is all about revenue
Rasheed said it best a few years ago when he guaranteed a victory and lost. The nba wants a game 7 because there is too much money that will be lost if we wonin six. See ya'll in game 7.

LOL @ People blaming David Stern. I hope you guys know that he was the commish back in the 80's and 90's, too.

And to the dudes thinking it was "all for the fun and love of the game" in the 90's, it was a business back then, too. (See: Chris Webber andKevin Garnett)

Exactly people are soo nostalgic...

I miss the good ole days too, but that doesnt mean the NBA has fallen.

I'll bet money EASTER and CHRISTMAS was also great when you were younger.

NBA would be great again if...

Got rid of like 2 teams (Grizz & Bobcats)

Get rid of teams in NO & OKC (move teams to back to their OG cities)

Have a 2 year rule for college players

Get rid of flopping completely

Stop calling technicals on everything, guys should be playing grudge matches. Much more fun to watch

Get rid of the zone

Allow hand checking

Shorter guaranteed contracts

What I really liked about the old NBA were the specialists. PG's averaging double digits in assists was the norm. Dudes that controlled boards. Theshotblockers that were never scared to get posterized. 3 point shooters that wouldn't miss. Fearless dunkers. Everyone wants to do everything now and areway to concerned about getting embarrassed.

too much to list. fundamentals of basketball have taken a backseat to showboating. the softening of the league. the age players are allowed into the league.

OFT!

letting 18 year olds in the league. even that one year rule now is not enough. the quality of the game suffered

The NBA is on a major upswing. The young talent right now is as good as any point in NBA history. The one-year rule, the rookie pay scale (forcing players toearn a second contract), the visibility and charisma of the league, etc. are all moving the NBA out of the dark ages. And to whoever it was that posted itdoesn't look the players are having fun and it looks like they're going to a job, I would say it's the exact opposite. Dwight Howard has morepersonality than the entire NFL player pool put together. Same with MLB. The NBA is actually the league that most understands its role as an ENTERTAINMENTbusiness, rather than just a business. Just remember that the major sports leagues have all gone through serious depressions in terms of discontent fans andinterest. NFL in the '80s, MLB in the '90s, and the NBA is recovering from its dark age, even though it took awhile.

Actually I think the NBA is on an upswing.. Older people are always going to look back on the old days with nostalgia - its very hard, maybe even impossible, for the present to be better than the past. People just look back on the past differently.. its the "good ol' days" mentality.

I'm sure if you asked younger generation who didn't grow up watching MJ, they'd tell you they're happy with the NBA

I don't think the youth are as much into the NBA as we once were though ...

We knew everything in the 90s man ...

PREACH!!! Not to mention when a hard foul was just a foul and respected.

The NBA today isn't even real; it's marketed entertainment.

The players of the 80s and 90s were of more traditional generations when a focus on working hard earned you success.

The current generation is over-hyped and over-paid, and what passes for quality basketball now would be laughed at 15-25 years ago.

The league is exploited for monetary gain.

Even stuff like arenas has taken some of the uniqueness away. Teams destroyed or left historic arenas to play in generic, lifeless venues with 8,000 luxuryboxes... all for money.

I could write up a lengthy list of why today's NBA is awful.
