Why do so many black Chicago residents have roots in Mississippi?

Been interested in having this discussion for a while. I live in Michigan and my grandparents are from the South ( VA, GA, AR) respectively. I understand that Jim Crow, racism etc. drove blacks from the South to North along with auto industry booming for Northern cities near lakes. But what specifically is the reason why so many blacks from Mississippi set up shop in Chicago?

Because people followed their family members north. Northeast is full of blacks from the Carolina's and Georgia.

Check out James Grossman's Land of Home: Chicago, Black Southerners, and the Great Migration

He provides an excellent analysis of the push and pull factors that led black folk from Mississippi (and elsewhere) to Chi-town.

My grandpa's parents came from the south. They did it because there was more work available, a little less racism, and well... have you ever been to Mississippi? That place seems like they never fully developed.

Not the same, but I have always wondered why there are so many Salvadorians in the DC Area. Why DC?

Since we are talking about Migration Patterns

Mississippi.

Don't live there.

that depends on what part of Mississippi you live in

i live 60 miles away from New Orleans and 60 miles away from Mobile
yes IN Mississippi
we have 13 casinos here and the Gulf of Mexico
not bad living at all

I'd assume like most people they're here for jobs. The whole DMV is a big *** melting pot. Every damn body is here.

Also the steel mill industry in that area provided a lot of blacks the opportunity to afford middle class lifestyle.

Because they know people there and won't be the only Salvadorians so more come. Like Minneapolis is full of Somalians. They come because they know they won't be the only ones.

LOL @ the responses

im trying to find the video i seen, but they went over each of the southern states and directly tied it to the railroad system

meaning
certain states had certain lines that went places

i think Arkansas' major lines went out West

Mississippi went north thru Memphis then Chicago

i cant remember the rest of them
but they showed a map with the railroad lines and compared it to the migration lines
