because the WNBA's value currently as a loss leader / positive pr vehicle,

now that it's gotten more culturally popular
The stars get the benefit of positive pr platform and aren't burdened with any of the costs.

If you are really good at basketball or you a traditionally attractive, or are good at social media,
you can take a WNBA career, and turn that into lucrative endorsements, an influencer career or turn yourself into a media personality.



this kind puts the union in a tough spots.

the profitable stars aren't going to share their endorsement dollars with the rank and file player
so you basically have to try and embarrass the league (who is losing money on paper) into giving you more money.
