i live in Baltimore.
I didnt have a true issue with relocation although i was contacted by a number of IT consulting companies that offered "free" training but in exchange i HAD to work for them for 2 years and i had to relocate wherever the company was located that came to them looking for workers. I guess i had sort of a commitment issue.
Over time i went on a couple interviews and they kept saying experience was an issue. Therefore:
1. i started(havent finished) a database in java that centered around my video game collection.
just as a personal project to mention on my resume(helped immensely).
2. with some help of some friends on NTwitter completely redid my resume to trigger key words(since most resumes arent read by a person but instead placed in a database and a system pulls resumes based on keywords/flags
3. continued to work on my softskills(interview). Even if you dont meet every qualification if they see that you have a personality that is easy to work with and you have potential they will consider.
I got an offer in January almost identical to your friend's.Its not with General Dynamics although i have interviewed with them. Im actually in the midst of the security clearance process now(quite lengthy)
in essence im saying dont give up guys...try to exhaust all networking opportunities as well.
and when you do make it...help those that are trying to get where you are.

I currently work for CACI and I used to be with ManTech and got some connects in the Comp. Science/Engineering/Programmer area over there still. They mainly do a lot of SharePoint development and integration work, but they have some other work as well.

if you are getting your TS w/ Poly you are golden even a Secret clearance is good. Process takes 8-12months, I heard its been taking closer to 12months recently. Resume has to be on point with the keywords now a days. I went to the BEYA career fair a few weeks ago and the Northrop Grumman recruiter said I had the best looking resume he had ever seen at a college event.
I can help you with formatting,key words, etc. , I know a good amount about gov.t /gov.t contractors , and clearances also.
What college did you go to? These VCU kids are landing jobs with 0 experience I didn't think it was possible ,but they are doing it.

I remember we had a IA company come give us an assessment of our network and they had a junior level guy with them fresh out of school from VCU.
I gave him a hard time mainly because I went to GMU
But any school coming out of VA going something IT related should be able to grab a job fairly easy in the DoD world. I know people from VCU, JMU, GMU, Va Tech, UVA, Christopher Newport, Mary Washington and even just going to NVCC (NoVA) that were able to grab at least an entry level or help desk type position somewhere.
I lucked out and got an internship with the Dept. of Navy (was only good while enrolled in college), and then found a company to give me an internship my last semester (I technically would not be enrolled if I went back to the Navy program once I finished that last semester) so I worked everyday since I only had 2 classes. Once I finished up at GMU they offered me a FT job with a clearance.
Wish my NT bros the best man. There are plenty of jobs out here in the DoD world in the DMV. I am going to have to remember to post them in here next time those recruiters call me and ask me if I know others that might be interested in the positions. I get them from Richmond up to MD, so most of you guys should be able to hit them up.

VA rivalries are too funny.Wow from Christopher Newport too? Im surprised , because they aren't even accredited (Comp Sci/ IT). Went there my freshmen year hated it lol transferred to VCU. I'm going down a similar path as you. Currently a Systems Engineer intern for the US Air Force in Boston (only go during breaks) I lucked out and landed it on USAJOBS.
DMV is prime real estate for DOD/govt contractor jobs, only place I would even consider relocating to is Cali. I will try to help out NT as much as possible once I graduate.
Only advice I have right now is gain as much experience as possible during undergrad, go to the big national career fairs BEYA and NSBE (they arent only for black people) , build a strong resume and the sky is the limit.
Go into Cyber Security if your school offers it, Im only getting a 9 credit Cyber Security Certificate and the employers are all over it completely over looking my BS in CS

IT Security is insane man. I get so many calls about being a Security Engineer but I can't see myself just scanning systems for vulnerabilities and creating documents based on it :x

C'mon NT Fam. When you parents and teachers asked you what you wanna be when you grow up as a kid, y'all never said "a telemarketer", "a cashier at Home Depot", "a window cleaner", "a constable", or "a cable guy".
We all said things like a movie star, a policeman, a firefighter, a doctor, a baseball player, a teacher. Those are jobs and careers. All that other stuff is just resume builders. How long are we gonna be working these dead end jobs, fellas?!? We gotta get our careers going. If cats like Chief Keef and Andy Milonakis are pushing foreign whips, then there's no reason why we can't achieve the same stature and tax bracket. Let's get stuff moving y'all!
Will always be appreciate the positivity and being optimistic.
But in this day in age, especially during these tough times. It's difficult to do than say. There's a whole seperate thread of NTers just trying to LAND a job.

The 9-5 life is hard but I am in the army now and its no where near 9-5 I mean there are some days and weeks etc that you working but everyday is diffrent honestly

I'm currently a contractor doing PC Support for a .com company. Been here since August and work 9-5:30 and I honestly love it. The day moves quickly and I'm constantly learning something new daily. Not sure if I want to pursue being a Systems Admin next or go w/ Networking and start studying for the CCENT. My contract is good until the end of May so I need to get on a move on that much I do know.

my friend transitioned to a desk job as a civilian after being in the 82nd for a few years...
...he says it is mind numbing and was considering re-enlisting as an EOD specialist...

If your job isn't mundane then it's not bad honestly. I answer calls and schedule appointments for WIC,u can imagine the pain I'm in and it's like "Oh, this is what a degree and certification will get you"

I work in DC and commute from Baltimore for a 8 hour gig that starts super early, 630-300. The job frankly is extremely boring, I work for a union so the pay is in the 30+dollar an hour range but it's just not my passion.
I'd rather be back in Seattle dropping 40 footers in the backcountry skiing but I choose to move out here and hang with my brother before he settles down.
Like many of you I want to be financially stable without working for some prick manager/supervisor. People typically stay in my position for 30 years and just retire making 70k eventually. Smh man I couldn't imagine that life, I've been here one year and a few months and I'm done. I need my freedom and the ability to be creative.
I've been reading 100 dollar start-up' s by Chris Guillebeau and it's been getting my brain working overtime. I've read about plenty of people who make their own without depending on any company. I know I have the ability to do it if they did it. The key is just finding what that niche market is and work it.
I've always assumed it takes a massive amount of money to initially start a business. Sometimes it's true but the idea is so important and most times it's non original.

DMV is full of private companies and financial institutions, not to mention the US Governent has plenty of them as well. With IT in this area, once you get in, it really isn't if you can get a job, but if it is the one that you want to take.

****. Try Working 11pm-11am sunday-friday. **** sometimes I go like 3 weeks straight without a day off.
On that 7 day work week this week. Sucks but good money. All of Sunday is double time. 84 total hours. 12 hours double time, 32 time in a half, and 40 at straight. Impacts the social life but, whatever blue collar life. I chose this when I dropped out of college.
